Job Title: Transport Shift Manager (nights)

Location: Darlington

Full-time: Permanent

Salary: £43,000 - £48,000

Are you ready to take your career to the next level? We’re looking for a dynamic and dedicated Transport Manager to lead our logistics operations and ensure our transportation teams operate smoothly and efficiently.

The Transport Manager will lead and oversee the daily operations of the transportation department during assigned shifts. This role is responsible for managing a team of drivers and logistics personnel to ensure efficient and safe transport of goods, while maintaining high standards of service and compliance. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a focus on problem‑solving, and a commitment to safety and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Promote and uphold a people‑first culture.
  • Consistently deliver an accuracy level for all customers by managing the credit process.
  • Ensure staff are trained and competent to carry out tasks and manage under‑performance.
  • Ensure drivers are ambassadors for the company and are suitably attired and presentable to customers and the public.
  • Deputise for the Senior Transport Shift Manager or Transport Operations Manager when requested.
  • Prepare shift planning for future shifts, referencing forecast/actual volumes, holidays and long‑term absences.
  • Evaluate actual journey duration versus plan and implement improvement.
  • Maintain Time and Attendance information, ensuring accuracy and preparing necessary documentation for daily operations meetings.
  • Evaluate current VOR position, make adjustments if required and communicate potential issues to Transport Operations Manager and Customer Service if impacting store delivery times.
  • Maintain an effective de‑briefing process to capture and record all pertinent information relating to each driver/journey daily, and act on this information to ensure improvements.
  • Action or plan disciplinary/grievance issues according to set time frames.
  • Ensure complete compliance with all transport legislation and the Working Time Directive legislation.
  • Monitor trailer temperature using the Verofresh system and respond to all alerts in a timely fashion.
  • Ensure full KPIs are met.
  • Ensure full audit readiness at all times.
  • Inspect the yard daily and complete a yard inspection once a week, identifying and dealing with any issues found.
  • Ensure vehicle cleanliness is maintained and manage instances where it is not.
  • Work in a multi‑temperature food storage environment.
Qualifications
  • Experience of scheduling systems (Paragon).
  • AS400 / JD EDWARDS.
  • Aware of all current and pending industry legislation and developments.
  • CPC preferred but not essential.
  • Good level of computer literacy including Microsoft Office.
