Job summary

NHS Blood and Transplant in Cambridge is seeking a Transport Driver to move blood and related products safely around the network 24/7. You will collect and deliver items between sites, use on-board technology to track movements, perform daily vehicle checks and keep equipment secure.

This hands-on role requires reliability, strong customer care, and flexibility to work evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays. Full training will be provided to support safe, patient-focused service.

Qualifications

• Previous vocational driving experience or evidence of driving proficiency.
• Able to work with information technology such as digital hand-held devices, Microsoft Office or other IT packages.
• A good geographical knowledge of the local area and road network.
• Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance checks.

Responsibilities

• Drive vehicles to collect, transport and deliver blood and related products and equipment.
• Keep vehicle secure and roadworthy, complete daily checks, and report defects promptly.
• Use digital devices to track work and complete records (electronic and paper).
• Load and unload products, including assembling and dismantling kit, moving up to 20kg.
• Carry out vehicle security checks and routine maintenance as required.
• Support urgent blue light deliveries when trained to do so.

Job Summary

As a Transport Driver you will keep blood and related products moving safely and on time, 24/7. You will collect and deliver essential items between our sites and customers, using on-board technology to track and record every movement. You will take pride in providing a professional service, completing daily vehicle checks, and keeping vehicles and equipment secure and clean. With full training, you may also support urgent blue light deliveries. This is a hands-on role where your judgement, reliability and customer care help protect patients and support clinical teams every day.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will drive our vehicles to collect, transport and deliver blood and related products and equipment. You will keep your vehicle secure and roadworthy, complete daily checks, and help us deliver a reliable service that patients and hospitals can depend on.

• Drive a range of vehicles up to and including 7.5 tonne (except in South London (Tooting), Basildon, Lancaster and Southampton, where you will drive light goods vehicles up to 3.5 tonne).
• Use digital hand-held devices to track work and complete accurate electronic and paper records.
• Load and unload products and equipment, including assembling and dismantling kit, and safely move items up to 20kg with or without lifting aids.
• Carry out vehicle security checks, daily checks and basic maintenance, and report defects promptly.
• Support urgent blue light deliveries when required (full training will be provided).
• Use your customer care skills to give colleagues, donors, hospital staff and members of the public a positive experience of NHSBT.

This role works a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week shift system, including variable hours and days, evening and night shifts, weekends and bank holidays on a rostered basis.

About You

Experience and Knowledge

Qualifications and Training

• Possession of a valid driving licence allowing you to drive in the UK with 6 points or less on your licence which will be subject to DVLA check is essential
• C1 driving licence would be desirable. B licence is essential for this role
• Able to meet NHSBT minimum standards of driving skills which will be assessed at interview stage
