Permanent / Hybrid (3 days in office / 2 days at home)

Closing Date: 11th September 2026

Purpose

The Operational Control Centre Outage Planning department is responsible for arranging network access on SP Energy Network’s HV, EHV & Transmission networks.

This position is based within the Transmission planning section of the Outage Planning department.

Applying high technical standards to operational outage planning for the Transmission network, the Planning Engineer will work with the System Operator to co-ordinate all system users and network outage requirements on SP Energy Network’s Transmission network, ensuring the network remains safe and secure.

Assisting the Control Room with the delivery of all planned Transmission outages, the Planning Engineer may train as a “Transmission Control Person” and support the Control Room as part of their role as a Transmission Planning Engineer. A part time shift pattern would apply if applicable.

Responsibilities

As part of the Operational Planning team, you will play a key role in the development and establishment of an integrated Distribution and Transmission Planning function. You will support the delivery of coordinated weekly and day-ahead Transmission and Distribution plans to the Control Room, ensuring the efficient execution of the outage programme.

You will contribute to all aspects of Customer Service within the Planning function, proactively and reactively responding to customer requirements while supporting the achievement of key performance indicators.

Maintaining effective planning interfaces across all system users and working closely with National Grid Electricity System Operator (NESO) to optimise system access for the business and the security of supplies to our end customers, you will contribute to the overall performance and success of the Planning team, supporting the achievement of operational objectives both individually and collectively, while acting as an effective and engaged member of the wider Operational Planning team.

In addition, you will undertake the responsibilities of a Control Person, assisting the Control Room with the safe and effective execution of planned system outages which may require working a shift rota.

What you’ll bring

You will possess a strong working knowledge of Energy Networks policies, procedures and operational practices, with a commitment to delivering the highest standards of customer service.

Demonstrating a sound understanding of health, safety and environmental legislation, you will be familiar with network and business data management systems, as well as relevant regulatory requirements and documentation.

With an awareness of network development policies and procedures, you will have the ability to develop effective solutions to complex operational challenges while applying excellent customer service and stakeholder management skills.

You will bring expert knowledge of System Security Standards and their interaction with system capability requirements. Broad operational experience across electricity networks, including Distribution and Transmission environments, and ideally generation, is desirable. A strong understanding of Company Safety Rules and associated procedures for working on high-voltage electrical equipment is also essential.

As an experienced user of PowerOn and PI systems, you will have a strong working knowledge of power system analysis tools and techniques, with a detailed understanding of load flow studies and contingency analysis.

Qualified to degree level or HNC in an engineering discipline, you will have significant relevant experience gained within a similar operational environment.

Strong IT skills are required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
