Overview

Job summary: Blood Sciences in Synnovis has transformed to a Hub and Spoke model with refreshed analytical equipment and digital morphology. The division aims to deliver a harmonised training programme across 7 sites, developing a multi-skills approach across Blood Sciences including Blood Transfusion. The programme will be led by Operational teams and Training Leads. As a Training Lead, you will support the Operations Managers in the delivery of training and development within their Service Line, reporting to the Deputy Operations Service Director and collaborating with the Apprenticeship and Scientific Development Team. You will have a high level of responsibility to ensure the successful delivery of training and development including induction, laboratory-based competencies and professional training for scientists in line with corporate objectives.

What you will do / Responsibilities

You will work closely with Apprenticeships & Scientific Development Team and Operational Management Team to ensure the effective delivery and reporting of training and development in your department. Key accountabilities include:

  • Participate in the delivery of the training and development framework including development of training materials and competency compliance
  • Work with DOSD to identify skills gaps and plan training for all roles in your department to meet the requirements of the Target Operating Model (TOM)
  • Provide relevant training documentation and support the accreditation process for professional bodies such as IBMS, NSHCS, UKAS
  • Create and deliver training for HCPC registration and further professional specialist training, including participation in Synnovis IBMS Portfolio and Clinical Science equivalence training programmes
  • Collate information and compile training reports for the Operational Management Team
  • Represent the department at the bi-annual Synnovis Training Committee meeting
  • Organise and deliver training to ensure employee compliance for laboratory-based competencies and statutory/mandatory requirements
  • Coordinate training for internal and external people as required (e.g., L6 BMS apprentices, STP Trainees, Clinical colleagues, student placements, work experience)
  • Ensure training records are developed and managed across the Service line
Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in Service Line Training meetings to provide departmental information and updates, contributing to service improvement and development
  • Provide compliance data, progress reports and statistics for workforce development and succession planning
  • Provide an annual training delivery plan considering statutory and mandatory training requirements and routine training needs
  • Coordinate all training events and monitor performance at a high level
  • Support strategic development and service improvement with the DOSD
  • Advise on implementation of new techniques, equipment and tests
  • Maintain open lines of communication with the Operational Management team for escalation of incidents
  • Contribute to the Service Line training appendix linked to the organisational training policy to ensure standards are met
  • Support robust change management procedures where service changes are planned
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation and external governing body frameworks or legislation
  • Manage and maintain the Competency framework and escalate risk areas as needed
  • Collaborate to ensure consistency and avoid duplication in Training delivery
  • Develop theory and practical training, organise classroom sessions with trainers and facilitators
  • Support HCPC registration training pathways for Biomedical and Clinical Scientists including equivalence; support apprenticeship pathways and end point assessment
  • Participate in training audits, gap analysis and document review compliance as required
  • Participate in induction training and onboarding across Synnovis
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to trainees, students and other staff
  • Demonstrate professionalism, patience and empathy when explaining complex subjects
  • Prioritise workload and communicate time pressures to meet deadlines
  • Foster a customer-centred service by inviting feedback and acting on it
  • Participate in UKAS assessments and other external inspections as applicable
  • Record and maintain CPD for HCPC registration and stay aware of regulatory changes
  • Comply with safe practices in the working environment and hold others to the same standards

The Hub

The hub is an eight-storey building, with operations across ten floors. Synnovis corporate function operates from the hub, and the site is located at Blackfriars in London. It is near Southwark and Blackfriars stations with surrounding amenities.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or Science equivalent
  • MSc Biomedical Science (or related subject) or equivalent
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable

  • Learning and Development qualification or willingness to work towards one
  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical Scientist
  • Specialist portfolio in relevant discipline (IBMS Portfolio route) or FIBMS or equivalent experience or Clinical Scientist

Experience

  • Essential: Experience of coaching and co-ordinating others; significant lab experience; experience designing, planning and delivering training; ability to manage a demanding workload; ability to lead by example

Desirable

  • Experience of being an assessor, verifier and/or examiner; quality management systems and processes

Skills and Knowledge

  • Highly specialised knowledge in the discipline; project management skills; ability to present complex information clearly; conflict resolution; relationship management across diverse groups; ability to manage workload in a dynamic environment

Desirable

  • Knowledge of current training issues in pathology; Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
