Job description

Trainee Field Technician Various locations across Southern and Central Scotland Salary: £30,630 per annum plus excellent benefits Duration: 3 years Full Time | Permanent Closing date: 16 October 2026

Help us create a better future, quicker

Our energy landscape is going through a period of profound change. Electricity will be at the heart of the transition to a cleaner, greener future, supporting the growth of renewable generation, electric vehicles and low‑carbon heating. Within SP Energy Networks, we are investing in technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. Our Field Technicians install, commission, maintain and fault‑find on the specialist systems that protect, monitor and control the electricity network. By joining this programme, you can be part of that transformation while developing a rewarding technical career.

What you’ll be doing

As a Trainee Field Technician, you can expect to learn while working through our structured three‑year development programme. This combines technical training from experienced instructors and operational colleagues, academic study at Forth Valley College to obtain a Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering and hands‑on workplace experience in sites and operational environments. You will also receive coaching and mentoring from experienced colleagues. As your knowledge and experience develop, so will your responsibilities. You can expect to be exposed to:

  • Installation, commissioning and maintenance of network apparatus.
  • Distribution protection and battery systems.
  • SCADA and telecontrol equipment.
  • Telecommunications apparatus.
  • Online monitoring equipment and network controllable points.
  • Defect diagnosis using PC‑based diagnostic tools.
  • Site activities in line with safety management systems.
  • Technical records, quality standards and work programmes.
  • Stakeholder engagement and communications including internal colleagues, contractors and customers.

You will initially undertake activities under appropriate supervision. As you demonstrate the required knowledge, practical competence and safety behaviours, you will progressively work towards the relevant technical and operational authorisations. You will be supported throughout the programme, but you will also be expected to take responsibility for your own learning, maintaining your training records and demonstrating that you can apply your knowledge safely and effectively in the workplace. Attendance at college, training and workplace locations is a key requirement and may involve regular travel and periods away from home. On successful completion of the programme, you will progress into a Field Technician role - subject to meeting all required performance, competence and authorisation standards.

In the substantive role, you will contribute as an effective member of the Field Operations Team by:

  • Installing, commissioning and maintaining new and existing network apparatus on time and to budget.
  • Diagnosing defects and supporting the safe, timely restoration of equipment following faults.
  • Ensuring site work is completed safely and in accordance with required safety management systems.
  • Delivering work programmes to agreed quality, timescale and cost requirements.
  • Providing a high standard of service during site activities and customer interactions.
  • Maintaining technical competence and operational authorisations required for the role.
What you’ll bring

We are looking for individuals with:

  • A genuine interest in engineering, technology and the electricity network.
  • A practical approach to problem solving and strong attention to detail.
  • A commitment to health and safety procedures.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.
  • An eagerness to learn, ask questions and respond positively to feedback.
  • Personal responsibility, reliability and the ability to organise your work.
  • Flexibility to travel to operational sites, training locations and Forth Valley College in Falkirk.
  • A willingness to work outdoors and in a range of operational environments.
  • A full UK driving licence by December 2026.

However, the following would be beneficial:

  • HNC in Electrical Engineering or similar
  • Previous experience in an industrial/electrical/mechanical environment
  • Sound understanding of Health & Safety policies and practices in the workplace
