A local council is offering a full-time career graded position on MV Bigga, Bluemull. The successful candidate will be supported to obtain necessary qualifications for Deck Rating Grade 2, with a commitment to college attendance and basic safety training required. This role provides a unique opportunity to develop professionally while enjoying the stunning landscapes of Shetland. The salary includes a Distant Islands Allowance, and flexible working options can be discussed.
Educated to National 4, or equivalent such as Standard Grade / GCSE.
Ability to pass a seafarer medical examination and obtain an ENG1 medical certificate. Details of the examination can be found in Merchant Shipping Notice 1866 amendment 1. The examination will be conducted by an approved Maritime and Coastguard Agency Physician.
The post holder must commit to attending college as directed and to follow approved courses of study, in order to obtain all qualifications to meet standards of Deck Rating Grade 2.
Prior to commencing on board duties, the post holder shall attend a maritime training provider to obtain basic safety STCW qualifications, namely:
During the first few months aboard the post holder will be closely supervised, whilst they work towards obtaining seatime for further training.
This vacancy is being advertised as a Career Graded post, which is a career development opportunity. This means that the Council is committed to supporting the successful candidate to obtain the necessary skills, abilities and knowledge to become fully competent in the role. Where there is a requirement to achieve a qualification, this will fully funded by the Council.
