Job summary

Barns Medical Practice in Ayr is recruiting a Trainee Practice Nurse to join our nursing team on a 30-hour-per-week basis. This role is designed as a structured training and development programme leading to competence across the full range of General Practice Nursing services, with full support and mentorship.

We offer a clear progression path into advanced practice areas including chronic disease management, sexual health services and independent prescribing.

Qualifications

• Registered General Nurse with current (or soon to have) NMC registration.
• Demonstrates a strong commitment to continuing professional development.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Motivated to learn and develop new clinical competencies.
• Can work independently whilst also contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Develop knowledge, skills and behaviours to deliver safe, person-centred care across the lifespan.
• Gain competencies in clinical assessment, health promotion and disease prevention, and long-term condition management.
• Participate in leadership, quality improvement and reflective practice.
• Contribute to digital information management and multidisciplinary collaboration.
• Gain experience in wound care, venepuncture, immunisations, cervical screening, and health promotion.

Barns Medical Practice is an innovative, forward-thinking training practice in the heart of Ayr. Due to the continued development of our clinical services, we are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Registered General Nurse (RGN) to join our nursing team as a Trainee Practice Nurse.

This is an excellent opportunity for a nurse who is passionate about developing a career in Primary Care and wishes to undertake a structured training and development programme leading to competence across the full range of General Practice Nursing services. Full support, mentorship and education will be provided, with clear opportunities for progression into advanced practice roles including Chronic Disease Management, Sexual Health services and Independent Prescribing.

The Role

Working within the Transforming Roles framework for Primary Care Nursing, you will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to deliver safe, effective, person-centred care across the lifespan. You will be supported to build competencies in:

• Clinical assessment and decision-making

• Person-centred and holistic care planning
• Public health improvement
• Team working and multidisciplinary collaboration

As your training progresses, you will gain experience in areas including:

• Wound care and compression therapy
• Venepuncture and ECGs
• Immunisations and vaccinations
• Sexual health and contraception advice
• Cervical screening
• Hypertension, diabetes and respiratory disease management
• Asthma and COPD reviews
• Health promotion and weight management
• Screening programmes and preventative care
• Patient education and self-management support
