Job summary

A respected contractor in Cambridge is seeking a Trainee Estimator to support senior estimators on healthcare and education projects. Responsibilities include preparing tender submissions, measuring drawings, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations. The ideal candidate will have strong numeracy, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude. Some experience in construction or estimating is preferred, but training will be provided. Job Summary

Our client is a respected contractor specialising in healthcare and education projects. They deliver high-quality, compliant builds that improve patient care and learning environments. With a supportive culture, structured training and clear progression routes, they are looking for a Trainee Estimator to join their team.

Responsibilities
  • Support senior estimators in preparing tender submissions and cost plans
  • Measure drawings and produce take-offs using plans and software
  • Obtain and compare supplier and subcontractor quotations
  • Prepare bills of quantities, cost breakdowns and pricing schedules
  • Input and maintain estimate databases and pricing templates
  • Attend site visits and pre-tender meetings to gather information
  • Ensure compliance with client-specific requirements, health & safety and procurement procedures
  • Help produce value-engineering options and variance reports
Qualifications
  • Strong numeracy and attention to detail
  • Some experience or interest in construction, building services, quantity surveying or estimating (placements, college courses, apprenticeships or relevant admin/estimating experience)
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings and specifications (training provided if needed)
  • Good IT skills; comfortable with Excel. Familiarity with estimating software is a plus but not essential
  • Excellent communication and organisation skills
  • A proactive, coachable attitude and desire to progress into a qualified estimator role
  • Willingness to travel to local sites
