Bromley Y is offering four Trainee Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) roles within its MHST and in partnership with King’s College London. You will train for one year while delivering school-based mental health support to children and young people in Bromley.

Successful trainees will study for a Post Graduate Diploma at King’s College London and apply learning through supervised practice, liaising with schools and CAMHS partners to support early intervention.

Qualifications

Bromley Y is a long-established charity which runs the Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Service for Children and Young People in Bromley. We are a supportive, inclusive, collaborative organisation which has an opportunity for four motivated professionals with a passion for improving outcomes for young people to join our Mental Health Support Team (MHST) to train as Education Mental Health Practitioners. Bromley Y is organised around the needs-led iThrive Model and operates an Integrated Single Point of Access with our partners in CAMHS to ensure children and young people receive the right support at the right time. Our MHSTs are well-established as part of the government scheme to increase access to mental health services in primary and secondary schools across Bromley borough.

The service has a diverse offer for young people and families (parents/carers), with evidence-based 1:1 and group interventions, workshops, webinars, mentoring, social prescribing and parent-support. The MHST carry out support calls and follow an advice and guidance approach and a core model of guided self help intervention. We champion the voices of young people, actively seeking feedback from clients, facilitating user participation groups which inform our practice and support offer.

Successful candidates will undertake a one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Education Mental Health Practice at King’s College London to learn the skills and knowledge necessary to fulfil the clinical requirements of this role.

  • Salary Banding: £25,133.23 per annum to £29,131.69 per annum subject to experience
  • Hours of Work: Full Time (37.5 hrs a week)
  • Location: Remote/Bromley Y/Bromley schools/ King’s College London - Denmark Hill Campus

This is an opportunity to join a passionate, creative MHST with excellent school engagement placed within a third-sector service who place young people and families (parents/carers) at the heart of everything we do. Our base is in central Bromley and we come together in the office one day per week to ensure everyone feels connected and supported with both their work and their wellbeing.

The trainee EMHP post is a diverse role which involves a mixture of university days and time working within the Bromley Y MHSTs to apply and develop learnt skills. On workdays, you will be guided through supervision and peer support to deliver evidenced-based interventions for mild-moderate mental health difficulties, liaise with schools and partner agencies, and facilitate psychoeducational events.

You will have opportunities to work with the team to provide consultation, signposting and support development of bespoke Whole School Approaches to mental health in line with schools’ individual needs. There will be scope and opportunities to work in our partner schools.

Trainees will be required to attend teaching for up to three days per week during the first term, two days a week in the second term and one day a week in the final term. Teaching and lectures will be mostly based at King’s College London campus in Denmark Hill. Students will be taught using a combination of lecture style workshops and small group seminars. Assessment on the programme will comprise of a combination of written, oral and video assignments.

They will enjoy collaborating with colleagues and feel confident sharing ideas and seeking solutions. They will look forward to new challenges and be keen to develop their professional skill set.

They will have:
  • Undergraduate degree, second class or above, in Psychology OR related subject (e.g., Psychology, Education, Childhood development, Social Work etc), OR any subject with further training or experience in a relevant field (e.g. Teaching/TA; Learning Support; HCA; Youth Work; Counselling etc).
  • OR relevant professional experience in CYP Mental Health/Education/Mentorship (to be considered on a case-by-case basis).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • The ability to work cohesively within small teams.
  • Motivation to learn and to be challenged.
  • The ability to use feedback and adapt accordingly.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Experience of working within a mental health setting and / or school pastoral care.
  • Experience of working with children and an understanding of how to talk with them.
