Where you’ll be working

Our energy landscape is going through a time of profound change. A challenge touching every part of our society, we need to eradicate carbon emissions to halt the effects of climate change. We need to change how we live our lives and replace the use of fossil fuels for transport and heat.

Electricity will be at the heart of the solution, through electric vehicles and heat pumps. And with more renewables generation and other technologies connected to the electricity grid than ever before, it’s our role to make sure we create a more efficient, cleaner, greener network to accommodate this increase in demand.

Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer‑led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century and you can be part of it.

You’ll find more information about SP Energy Networks, including details of our current projects, on our website.

What you’ll be doing

With commitments to achieve Net Zero as early as 2030, it’s crucial that we facilitate significant increases in Electric Vehicle (EV), heat pump and renewable generation connections to support the decarbonisation of heat and transport. To do this, we urgently need Electrical Fitters, Cable Jointers and Overhead Lineworkers to join our business.

The Trainee Craftsperson programme provides hands‑on experience in the installation and maintenance of power infrastructure and delves deep into the intricacies of renewable energy technologies. It offers a unique opportunity to enter the exciting world of energy networks, allowing participants to learn and grow in a dynamic and rapidly evolving industry.

Our trainee programme is designed to build on your existing skills from other industries, combining technical, academic and on‑the‑job training. Not only will you study towards a nationally recognised qualification, but you will also earn a competitive salary, develop new skills and gain invaluable knowledge and experience.

Key Dates & Commitment

We will be holding Assessment Centre days at our Dealain & Hoylake Training Centres between the 8th and 12th of December.

You’ll need to commit to a start date of 5th May 2026. You must attend continuous training courses for approximately 5 months.

What’s in it for you
  • Starting salary £28,950
  • A generous pension scheme – we’ll double match your contributions up to 10%
  • A broad range of flexible benefits including share incentive plans, employee discounts, charity matched funding and many more.

Upon completion of the Adult Craft Trainee Programme, you’ll become a qualified Craft professional achieving either a Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering or a Certificate in Power Networks Craftsperson.

What you’ll bring

You’ll have experience working within an industrial or electrical environment where adherence to health and safety policies is vital. A driving licence is essential as you will be required to travel to various sites both during and after your training period.

We place a strong emphasis on health and safety, so experience in this area is crucial.

As an Electrical Fitter or Cable Jointer, you’ll need to be comfortable working in confined spaces. As an Overhead Lineworker, you’ll be comfortable climbing and working at heights.

If you already have experience in either of these trades, there may be opportunities to reduce the duration of the training period accordingly.
