Trainee Air Traffic Controller

Air Traffic Control is a career like no other. We are recruiting controllers to handle aircraft at some of the world’s busiest airports and in the most complex airspace. The work is demanding but highly rewarding. You will join a highly trained team of professionals that guides pilots to keep aircraft flying safely, efficiently and on time.

Responsibilities
  • Work in shifts to instruct and inform pilots by radio.
  • Use radar and other technologies at your workstation.
  • Think on your feet and balance the demands of the air traffic while maintaining safety – our primary concern.
Training and Career Path
  • Initial basic training in Hampshire or Gloucester – 12 to 15 months.
  • After completion, post to an airport tower or control centre to complete unit‑based training.
  • Controller role is mobile grade – you could be posted anywhere in the country after training.
  • Initial salary: £31,136.95 per year (basic salary £22,375.80 plus accommodation allowance).
  • After unit‑based training: approximately £36,000 per year.
  • Upon successful completion of training: £48,480 to £54,032 per year, depending on posting.
Eligibility
  • 5 GCSEs or equivalent at grade C/4 or above, including English and Maths.
  • Aged 18 or over on application.
  • Right to work in the UK without restrictions or sponsorship.
  • Able to meet necessary CAA medical standards.
Selection Process
  • Four stages: application, assessment centre, interview, and offer.
  • Assessment centres will be held from the middle of January 2026.
  • Employment start date will depend on business need; courses start from March 2026.
  • Do not apply if you cannot join within the next 12 months (unless you are leaving the military and have an extended notice period).
