University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an Advanced Clinical Practitioner for the Adult Emergency Department at Royal Derby Hospital. The role combines advanced autonomous clinical practice with leadership, education, quality improvement and research opportunities within a busy ED.

The post is part of a rotational shift pattern and provides exposure to diverse ED caseload, with progression through Agenda for Change bands on completion of training and portfolio

Qualifications

• Completion of Level 7 Advanced Clinical Practice programme and portfolio demonstrating four pillars of advanced practice.
• Demonstration of advanced clinical practice through a comprehensive workplace-based assessment portfolio.
• Progression to Band 8a requires successful completion of the academic programme and evidence portfolio.

Responsibilities

• Provide advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis and management for undifferentiated and complex ED presentations.
• Make autonomous clinical decisions and contribute to patient flow and safe care across the department.
• Lead and educate colleagues, contribute to service development, quality improvement and research.
• Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team across all ED areas (Resus, Majors, Ambulatory Care, Ambulance Receiving/Triage).

Job description

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) is an integral member of the multidisciplinary team within the Adult Emergency Department at Royal Derby Hospital, providing advanced clinical assessment, diagnosis, treatment and decision‑making for patients presenting with undifferentiated and often complex healthcare needs.

The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with ACPs working across a rotational shift pattern comprising:

• 07:30 - 17:30
• 14:00 - 00:00
• 22:00 - 08:00

ACPs work autonomously within their scope of practice whilst contributing to the wider emergency care team, supporting patient flow, timely clinical decision‑making, and high-quality patient care across all areas of the department.

The qualified ACP role is appointed at Agenda for Change Band 8a following successful completion of a Level 7 Advanced Clinical Practice programme and demonstration of the four pillars of advanced practice through a comprehensive portfolio of clinical and workplace‑based assessments.

The Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (TACP) role is appointed at Agenda for Change Band 7 for the duration of training. Progression to Band 8a is subject to successful completion of both the academic programme and the required portfolio of evidence demonstrating competence in advanced clinical practice.

The ACP role within the Adult Emergency Department at Royal Derby Hospital offers a rewarding opportunity to combine advanced autonomous clinical practice with leadership, education, quality improvement and research.

ACPs work across all areas of the Emergency Department, including Resuscitation, Majors, Ambulatory Care and Ambulance Receiving/Triage. They assess, diagnose, treat and manage patients with undifferentiated and complex healthcare needs, working autonomously within their scope of practice while collaborating closely with the multidisciplinary team.

The role provides exposure to a diverse patient population and supports the development of advanced expertise in Emergency Medicine. ACPs play a key role in delivering timely, high-quality, patient‑centred care and supporting patient flow throughout the department.

Alongside clinical duties, ACPs contribute to all four pillars of Advanced Clinical Practice through education, leadership, service development, quality improvement and research. Protected non‑clinical time supports continuing professional development, supervision, teaching and project work.

Successful applicants will join an established ACP workforce with opportunities for ongoing professional development, including RCEM Credentialing following completion of MSc Advanced Clinical Practice training and attainment of substantive ACP status.
