Job description

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is proud to provide services which are smoke free - meaning that we no longer facilitate service users to use tobacco products while using our services. The Health Protection Unit are looking for an enthusiastic individual who can work across multiple mental health inpatient units in Chesterfield and Derby City to support service users to undertake a structured quit attempt or maintain temporary abstinence from tobacco.

While experience of providing smoking cessation support is preferred it is not essential. Training on smoking cessation support in a mental health setting will be provided to ensure that the successful candidate is providing support which aligns with Trust values and clinical best practice.

Due to the nature of the role, the successful applicant will be expected to act as a positive role model for smoking cessation, which includes being a non-smoker and supporting a smoke-free environment in line with NHS policies.

The role requires full time hours but will accept a job share if necessary.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role involve supporting individuals who have been admitted to an inpatient mental health unit to quit smoking or maintain temporary abstinence from tobacco. The postholder will be required to travel between sites in Chesterfield & Derby City to identify service users who smoke and work with clinicians to provide Nicotine Replacement Therapy and/or vapes. The postholder will work autonomously to deliver behavioural support to individuals as part of a structured quit attempt, building rapport with service users and leading on Health Promotion Activity on wards. The postholder will manage the transition of inpatient service users into the community stop smoking service at the point of discharge. However, as the inpatient smoking cessation service is developed there is potential that the role will eventually include providing ongoing support to service users after discharge.
