Job description
Overview

An exciting opportunity to lead the Guy's and St Thomas' Acute Tobacco Dependence Treatment Team, with responsibility for the Guy's Hospital site. We are seeking a dynamic leader with a strong background in directing and delivering a range of tobacco dependence treatment interventions in the acute environment. As the team evolves, you will lead new developments and delivery of existing inpatient and outpatient clinics across our two hospital sites.

Areas of work include continuing the development and delivery of services to meet the Long Term Plan for tobacco, including ward-based interventions, outpatient clinics and MDT training. We are about to roll out the COSTED programme in ED and contribute to the Vital 5 agenda. This will help drive a culture change towards prevention and promote optimised physical health and wellbeing in the Trust.

Duties
  • To provide the strategic framework, development, and operational management of the Trust's stop smoking services.
  • Provide day-to-day line management to the Acute Tobacco Dependence Treatment team.
  • Partnership working with SEL ICB and community tobacco dependence treatment colleagues to support delivery of services to GSTT patients.
  • Work with healthcare professionals to ensure Long Term Plan policies for patients who smoke in a smoke-free hospital environment are implemented.
  • Support, develop and implement other stop smoking initiatives, e.g. Stop before the Op, Costed.
  • Promote the stop smoking referral system across all hospital departments.
Working for our organisation

We are a small friendly team with extensive experience in tobacco dependence, guided by the Trust's values:

  • Caring – patient- and person-centred care; we listen, are compassionate, respectful and welcoming.
  • Ambitious – we innovate and strive for excellence; we act with integrity, welcome feedback, and seek improvements to care and experience; we are efficient and committed to growth.
  • Inclusive – we respect diversity and collaborate; we are building an anti-racism organisation and seek opportunities to collaborate; we show sensitivity to cultural diversity.
Essential responsibilities and strategic priorities
  • Lead the development, management, monitoring and evaluation of Acute Tobacco Dependence Treatment services, ensuring alignment with national and local requirements, Trust and national guidance.
  • Act as the Trust's expert resource for tobacco dependence support and be the first point of contact for related queries and information requests.
  • Undertake training needs assessments across clinical services so staff can provide first-line health promotion advice and screen patients in hospital-based services for support and onward referral.
  • Continue to develop and implement the Long Term Plan initiative across inpatient specialties.
  • Collaborate with partners, including the SEL ICB, to address health inequalities as a priority for the Trust as an acute provider of care, and raise awareness of the links between smoking, ill-health and inequality.
  • Support the Tobacco Dependence Treatment Lead in strategic planning with the SEL ICB and internal Trust management to embed tobacco dependence treatment in healthcare culture and to meet local and national targets.
  • Assist with liaising with finance teams to quantify cost implications of new systems and processes and to develop funding approval business cases.
  • Work with Trust colleagues to raise awareness of how to access tobacco dependence treatment across the Trust and community.
  • Provide specialist advice and support to service providers, healthcare professionals and management teams within the organisation.
  • Engage in partnerships relevant to tobacco dependence treatment (e.g., London Tobacco Control Network, London Tobacco Dependence Acute Leads).
