Description
We are looking for an experienced 3rd Engineer (watch keeper) ready to join cruise vessel MARELLA EXPLORER, embarkation is on 22/Dec/2025. The contract is 3 months on/off and requires cruise ship experience, good references, and recommendations.
Position Summary
- Maintain a safe engine room watch while the vessel is at sea, at anchor, and in port in accordance with Company Policies, National or International standards, and any other prescribed regulations.
- Execute safe and efficient performance of main and auxiliary engines.
- Lead safe operations of machinery and equipment, monitoring engine control systems in the engine room.
- Execute repair and maintenance work inside and outside the engine room, overseeing maintenance in accordance with Company Policies and relevant regulations.
- Ensure proper coordination with different technical parties and departments.
Reporting Structure
- Reporting to the Staff Engineer.
Safety Duties
- Participate in crew safety drills according to instructions.
- Always comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
- Lead by example by taking care of health and safety of self and others.
- Ensure that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals, and safety devices are used correctly.
Education / Experience / Qualifications
- Valid STCW95 certification.
- Valid CoC A-III/1.
- Appropriate certification as required by regulations.
- Extensive experience in subordinate positions on passenger ships in a similar role; preference for experience with Wartsila engines.
- Physically and medically fit.
- Moral integrity is required.
- Public Health, Sanitation, and Environmental training courses are appreciated.
- Proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings and manuals.
- Experience with Alaska ports is a plus.
- Public Health, Coast Guard, and Port State Control experience is recommended.
Language Requirements
Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical) is required, as it is the working and safety language on board. Additional languages are considered beneficial.
Computer Knowledge
Good working knowledge of AMOS and Microsoft applications.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
Required to stand, walk long distances, reach, and sit. Repetitive motion of bending, going up and down stairs, and climbing ladders. Lifting or pushing up to 50lbs. The position requires overtime work and irregular schedules. Work is performed in the engine control room and engine spaces with noise, light traffic, and distracting environments.

Key Responsibilities
- Act as the Chief Engineer’s representative during engine room watch, supervising the on‑watch team and ensuring watches are carried out properly.
- Operate and maintain the main engine and associated auxiliary engines.
- Execute maintenance, operation, and repairs in the engine room.
- Have full knowledge of handling characteristics, safety features, and the Company’s VMS.
- Ensure seaworthiness of the vessel in the engine department.
- Maintain sufficient stock of spare parts and consumables on order and in the onboard system.
- Delegate work to oilers and wipers.
- Familiarize lower‑ranked engine officers with the engine room, control room, and all associated equipment.
- Participate in developing on‑board operational plans in accordance with technical, legislative, safety, and procedural specifications.
- Report completed maintenance to the Chief Engineer and Staff Engineer for entry into the planned maintenance system.
- Perform routine pumping operations.
- Operate diesel generators, emergency diesel generator, emergency fire pump, purifiers, and air compressors.
- Maintain firefighting and safety equipment, fire doors, and watertight doors.
- Execute fuel and ballast operations per Company procedures; prevent marine pollution.
- Ensure stability and stress conditions are maintained within safety limits.
- Handle technical maintenance and repairs inside and outside the engine room (including but not limited to: air compressors, emergency air compressors, tanks level system, hydrofor, ballast pumps, bilge/sludge systems, watertight doors, damage control, ship equipment as described), in consultation with the Chief Engineer/Staff Engineer.
- Keep the Chief Engineer and Staff Engineer promptly and fully informed of all problems, significant matters, and any deficiencies.
- Prepare the noon report and related counters.
- Ensure that Company, Public Health, National, and International standards are maintained and report non‑compliance.
- Make entries and maintain accurate and up‑to‑date engine log books, technical and waste related logs, including oil record books.
- Monitor subordinates’ working/rest hours and overtime; maintain 100% compliance with Company requirements and ILO/MLC.
