Job summary

Circle Health Group is seeking a Theatre Practitioner for bank shifts at St Edmunds Hospital. You will join the theatres team to cover busy periods and annual leave, supporting the surgical team through instrument preparation, sterility, and optimal patient care.

Apply your theatre experience in a dynamic, patient‑focused setting with flexible bank hours. The role requires registration with NMC or HCPC and theatre experience in at least one area.

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (NMC) or ODP HCPC registration required.
• Experience or training in a theatre environment (scrub, anaesthetics, or recovery).
• Strong infection control, manual handling and patient safety understanding.

Responsibilities

• Prepare instruments and maintain sterility for surgical procedures.
• Support anaesthetist with equipment prep, monitoring, airway management and positioning.
• Provide post-operative care and monitor vitals, manage pain and nausea; readiness for discharge.
• Adhere to infection prevention policies at all times.
• Set up operating theatres according to surgery type and patient needs.
• Check and report faults in surgical and anaesthetic equipment.
• Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to ensure safe surgical lists.
• Contribute to a positive, respectful theatre environment.

Theatre Practitioner (Bank) St Edmunds Hospital Bank Shifts Salary: Competitive

St Edmunds Hospital in Bury St Edmunds is part of Circle Health Group, Britain's leading provider of independent healthcare with a nationwide network of hospitals & clinics, performing more complex surgery than any other private healthcare provider in the country.

We have an opportunity for a Theatre Practitioner to join their team of staff in the Theatres department. This is a bank role working on an “as and when required” basis, you will be required to supplement staffing levels during busy periods and provide cover for existing staff in times of annual leave or absence.

Duties of this role include:

• Assist the surgical team by preparing instruments, maintaining sterility, anticipating surgeon needs, and ensuring equipment safety;
• support the Anaesthetist in equipment preparation, patient monitoring, airway management, and positioning;
• and provide post-operative care, monitoring vital signs, managing pain and nausea, and ensuring patient readiness for discharge.
• Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and procedures at all times.
• Set up operating theatres according to surgery type and specific patient requirements.
• Check all surgical and anaesthetic equipment prior to use and report faults immediately.
• Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to achieve safe and efficient surgical lists.
• Support and contribute to a positive, respectful, and efficient theatre environment.

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

• Registered Nurse (NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (HCPC).
• Experience or training in a theatre environment in at least one area (scrub, anaesthetics, or recovery).
• Understanding of infection control, manual handling, and patient safety principles.
• Ability to work under pressure, problem-solve, and respond quickly to changes in a dynamic environment.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to safe surgical practice.
