Job description

Job Title: Test Engineer Do you love turning complex challenges into high-quality tech solutions that make a difference? We’re one of the UK’s most forward‑thinking law firms, built on a foundation of innovation, collaboration, and ambition. Join us, and let’s shape the future together. * We are in a period of exclusive direct sourcing for this role and are not currently accepting applications from recruitment agencies.

The role in 60 seconds
  • Role: Test Engineer
  • Team: IT
  • Location: Hybrid working from Exeter, Plymouth or Bristol
  • Working Pattern: Full time
  • Why this role matters: This role is key to building trust in our systems, driving innovation, and ensuring our technology powers the firm’s strategic ambitions.
What you’ll do

You’ll be embedded in agile delivery teams, working on exciting new solutions and enhancements, while also supporting our technical services team with live issues. From manual and automated testing to root cause analysis and stakeholder demos, your work will be central to ensuring our systems run smoothly and meet the highest standards. You will collaborate closely with developers, product SMEs, and BAs to clarify requirements and shift testing earlier in the SDLC.

In this role, you’ll:
  • Deliver functional, exploratory, and non‑functional testing (manual and automated)
  • Build automation using Playwright (TypeScript/JavaScript)
  • Collaborate in Agile teams, advising on quality and risk
  • Shift testing earlier in the SDLC and validate technical changes
  • Investigate defects and document findings clearly
  • Clarify requirements and acceptance criteria with BAs
  • Support and help coordinate UAT readiness and execution
  • Drive continuous improvement in tools, performance, and accessibility
  • Stay up to date with industry trends and best practices
What we’re looking for

A proactive Test Engineer with a passion for learning, who thrives in a fast‑paced, client‑focused setting and is eager to grow their automation and DevOps expertise. In this role you’ll bring:

Essential skills
  • Hands‑on testing experience within Agile delivery environments.
  • Understanding of the Test Pyramid, shift‑left practices, and continuous testing.
  • Proficiency with Playwright or similar automation tooling.
  • TypeScript or JavaScript scripting fundamentals.
  • Azure DevOps (test artefacts, pipelines, boards).
  • Experience testing solutions on Microsoft Power Platform, Dynamics 365, and M365.
  • Strong analytical skills with ability to articulate risk and quality outcomes.
  • Strong communication and teamwork, adaptable to changing priorities.
Desired skills
  • API testing experience (e.g. Postman, REST calls, Dataverse API).
  • Experience working with Dataverse, SQL, or structured datasets.
  • Exposure to performance testing tooling (e.g., JMeter, Azure Load Testing).
  • ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation as a minimum.
  • Awareness of security, accessibility, and operational readiness testing.
  • Experience contributing to shared automation frameworks or CI/CD quality gates.
  • Familiarity with legal and regulatory software environments.
Other attributes
  • Calm, structured problem‑solver who collaborates to resolve issues quickly.
  • Able to rapidly understand new applications and their interactions with third‑party systems.
  • Communicates clearly with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Passionate about continuous improvement and delivering value efficiently.
  • Demonstrates ownership of quality across the lifecycle — not just at the end.
  • Share our passion for innovation, collaboration, and achieving great things together.
