The Health Information Coder is responsible for the coding and classification of all diseases and interventions for inpatient, one day stay, emergency and outpatient encounters, in accordance with the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) standards and Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MoHLTC) requirements.
The Health Information Coder utilizes the International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision, Canada (ICD-10-CA) and the Canadian Classification of Health Interventions (CCI), Canadian Coding Standards (CCS), DAD and NACRS Abstracting manuals, and the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) Cancer Staging System.
The Health Information Coder translates clinical documentation into standardized alphanumeric codes which is submitted to CIHI and the MoHLTC for funding and resource allocation. Coded data captures resources and complexity and the true acuity of our patient population.
