Job description
Overview

You'll help keep our nation moving every single day. This is a critical part of the work we do – the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician you will work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from a variety of different backgrounds; this might be the first time you have even considered a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviours, and if you can demonstrate that, we will provide all the necessary training to have you working safely and competently out on the network.

Diversity & Inclusion

Diversity and inclusion are more than just buzz words for us. We constantly strive to make sure we provide a welcoming and safe environment for everyone. We recognise that certain groups are under‑represented within our team and we work closely with our regional diversity and inclusion networks to support these groups as best as we can.

Safety First

Keeping people safe on the railway is at the heart of everything we do. Safe behaviour is therefore a requirement for all Network Rail employees. You should demonstrate personal dedication to safety in your application.

Working Conditions

Our technicians work outside in all weather conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. Duties may involve demanding manual work, often requiring the transport of kit across tricky terrain. You must be safety focused, respectful of rules, and a team player – you may work next to moving trains travelling at high speed.

Responsibilities & Leadership

You will be a natural team player and, when asked, a team leader. You will deliver work safely, ensuring the team possesses the right competencies to meet our strict safety standards. You will be a role model for safe working behaviours and confident to challenge potential risks to safety, so that everyone gets home safely every day. Today's technicians can progress to tomorrow's team leaders.

Key Skills & Qualifications

While rail experience is not required, you should show how your transferable skills meet the following:

  • Leadership – able to lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
  • Effective communication – strong communication skills and ability to deliver clear instructions to the team and other colleagues.
  • Technical skills – knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the discipline you apply for.
  • Safety – consistently role model safe behaviours, arrange and implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
  • Problem solving – persistent in finding safe and effective solutions, continuously developing skills and keeping up to date with new standards, procedures and instructions.
  • Willingness to learn – consistently develop skills and competencies relevant to your discipline.
  • Relevant qualification – ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline, or have achieved an equivalent level of experience.
Requirements

Additional information that may help:

  • Shifts – technician roles involve a changing shift pattern, including days, nights and weekends.
  • Outdoor working – comfortable working in all weathers.
  • Safe working – offers of employment are subject to drug and alcohol testing, a relevant medical assessment and BPSS pre‑employment checks including hearing and eyesight examinations.
  • Driving – a driving licence (category B) is required to drive Network Rail vehicles.
Career Path & Development

We invest in the knowledge and skills of our people to enable them to fix the most common faults themselves. Our training programme will give you the technical and non‑technical skills you need to progress from technician to team leader, and beyond, within a clear, rewarding career path.

Benefits
  • Privileged staff travel – leisure travel discount of 75 % on all leisure travel, including family members.
  • Subsidised rail and underground season tickets – up to 75 % off if you travel to work by train.
  • Benefits package – healthcare offers, cycle‑to‑work scheme, discounted healthcare club membership, childcare, online shopping discounts.
  • Work‑life balance – 35 hrs per week contract, hybrid working, flexible working and family‑friendly support.
  • Paid volunteering leave – 5 days.
  • Reserves leave – 2 weeks paid reserve leave for the Armed Forces community.
