Job summary

Network Rail in Guildford is seeking a Technician - Off Track Maintenance to keep the railway safe and clear. You will support the Team Leader, inspect and maintain off-track assets, and deliver renewal work as required.

This safety-critical role requires flexibility to cover days, nights and weekends, a valid driving licence, and a commitment to high safety standards. Training and progression opportunities are available within the Southern Region.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in planning and implementing safe systems of work.
  • Strong team player with the ability to embed a culture of safety within your team.
  • Knowledge of off-track maintenance techniques, including vegetation management and drainage.
  • NVQ Level 1 or 2 (or equivalent experience).

Responsibilities

  • Deliver work safely and efficiently in line with approved systems, standards, and procedures.
  • Carry out inspections, maintenance, and fault-finding on off-track assets such as drainage, fencing, vegetation, and other infrastructure.
  • Ensure tools, vehicles, and equipment are fit for use and properly maintained.
  • Accurately report completed work and maintain essential records.

Technician - Off Track Maintenance: Keep the Railway Safe and Clear

Location: Guildford

Salary: Starting from IMC20 £31,288 or Standard Maintenance Contract £38482 + Outer London Allowance

Hours: Full-Time

Shift Pattern: Days, Nights & Weekends (Safety-Critical Role)

About The Role

We're looking for a motivated and safety‑focused individual to join our Off Track Maintenance team.

In this role, you'll support the Team Leader in organising and motivating the team, ensuring work is delivered safely and to the highest standards. You'll be responsible for carrying out inspections, diagnosing faults, performing maintenance, and delivering renewal work on off‑track assets-while occasionally stepping up to lead the team when required.

Your Experience And Skills
What We’re Looking For
  • Proven experience in planning and implementing safe systems of work
  • Strong team player with the ability to embed a culture of safety within your team
  • Knowledge of off‑track maintenance techniques, including vegetation management and drainage
  • Relevant competencies for the role (or willingness to achieve them), ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 (or equivalent experience)
  • A valid driving licence and willingness to drive

This is a safety‑critical role, which means you'll need to pass a medical assessment and be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
