Technical Product Owner – Hardware Engineering Environments

Job summary

Thales is seeking a Senior Hardware Engineering Product Owner in Crawley to represent engineering users, own the backlog, define requirements and acceptance criteria, and validate completed features. You will gather user feedback, lead the evolution of engineering applications, align UK toolsets with Thales workbench roadmaps, plan migration, and drive reduction of technical debt.

Strong collaboration with stakeholders and the Technical Authority is essential, with eligibility for Security

Qualifications

• Practical experience in hardware engineering environments.
• Strong understanding of hardware engineering processes and best practices.
• Knowledge of mechanical, electronic, interconnect/cabling, or FPGA engineering.
• Experience defining, architecting, implementing or managing engineering development environments.
• Ability to translate user needs into effective technical solutions.
• Experience prioritising work and coordinating delivery across technical teams.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Relevant experience with engineering applications or equivalent platforms.
• UK National and SC clearance requirements; residency in the UK 5 of last 5 years or per policy.

Responsibilities

• Represent the needs of hardware engineering users and champion effective ways of working.
• Own and prioritise the product backlog.
• Define requirements, acceptance criteria and feature priorities.
• Validate and approve completed features.
• Collect user feedback through reviews and continuous engagement.
• Lead evolution, consolidation and migration of hardware engineering applications.
• Align UK engineering toolsets with Thales Group workbench roadmaps.
• Define and deliver modern engineering environment solutions across secure networks and cloud platforms.
• Drive retirement of legacy tools and reduction of technical debt.
• Plan migration, retention or archiving of programme data.
• Make technical and product decisions for the area.
• Ensure engineering practices, processes, tooling, infrastructure and internal services work together effectively.
• Collaborate with Product Owners, Technical Leads, Portfolio Managers and Delivery Managers.
• Act as the key interface between hardware engineering users, leadership teams, product owners, architects, delivery teams, engineering heads and the Thales Global Services Hardware Tribe.
• Act as Technical Authority and Architect for the area.

Requirements

• Practical experience of working in a hardware engineering environment
• Strong understanding of hardware engineering processes and best practice
• Knowledge of one or more of: mechanical engineering, electronics, interconnect and cabling, or FPGA engineering
• Experience defining, architecting, implementing or managing engineering development environments
• Ability to understand user needs and translate them into effective technical solutions
• Experience prioritising work, managing backlogs or coordinating delivery across technical teams
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
• Relevant experience with engineering applications or equivalent platforms
• Must be a UK National
• Must achieve and maintain Security Clearance (SC) without any caveats before commencing employment
• Generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years for full SC; in some circumstances, 3 years’ UK residence over the last 5 years may be accepted with additional overseas checks
• A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electronic, Electrical or a related engineering discipline would be beneficial
• Relevant professional experience may be considered in place of formal qualifications
