W Talent Manufacturing and Technical are working with a metals manufacturer in Sheffield to recruit a Technical Manager – Specialty Metals. This is an exciting opportunity to join a globally respected organisation with a long history and a modern focus on innovation, sustainability, and technical excellence.

The Role

As Technical Manager, you'll lead all metallurgical, analytical, and quality activities across the business. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, you'll act as the technical authority – ensuring all specialty metal products meet the highest standards of performance, quality, and compliance. This role includes full responsibility for the chemical laboratory operation and technical management of third‑party melting partners, including VIM and EAF operators.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide expert metallurgical guidance across a diverse range of specialty metals, alloys, and powders.
  • Manage the in‑house chemical and analytical laboratory, ensuring technical accuracy and regulatory compliance (ISO 9001, AS9100).
  • Oversee analytical techniques including wet chemistry and spectrometry.
  • Lead and develop a skilled technical and quality team, driving continuous improvement.
  • Provide technical oversight for third‑party VIM and EAF operators, including audits, process approvals, and compliance verification.
  • Manage the company's Quality Management System, ensuring full traceability and adherence to aerospace and international standards.
  • Serve as the technical interface with customers, offering metallurgical expertise and support for commercial activities.
About You
  • Degree (or higher) in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • 7-10 years' experience in specialty metals with strong metallurgical and technical management experience.
  • Solid understanding of VIM, EAF, and secondary refining processes.
  • Proven leadership in laboratory management and quality systems (ISO 9001 / AS9100).
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or professional membership (IoM3, RSC, etc.) desirable.
