Profile

Contek Recruitment are currently working with a specialist sheet metal fabrication company, based in Coventry, West Midlands, who are looking for an experienced Technical Manager to join their growing team on a permanent basis.

Established in 1948, our client works with their customers through every stage of vehicle development, from prototyping and verification, through to full production and aftermarket. With in‑house tooling and design facilities, combined with their advanced production facilities, they work with the world's leading automotive companies such as Aston Martin, Jaguar Land Rover, Volta and LEVC. Our client manufacturing facilities are home to state‑of‑the‑art equipment, set across four sites, occupying more than 120,000 square feet. With significant recent investment, the expanded facilities give them the capacity and capability to meet the needs of their growing customer base. Their processes include all aspects of automotive fabrication, including pressings, 3 & 5‑axis laser cutting, brake press machining, welding, and metal finishing.

Technical Manager.

Job Type

Full time, permanent.

Working Hours

Monday to Thursday (07:30 AM until 15:30 PM) and Friday (07:30 AM until 12:00 PM)

Salary/Pay

Between £50,000 – £60,000 per year (dependent on experience).

Duties & Responsibilities

Tooling, DFM & Process Development (Primary Focus)

  • Lead the design, production, trial, and maturation of tooling for new and existing parts.
  • Provide DFM input on prototypes and production parts to ensure manufacturability, efficiency, and repeatability.
  • Work with engineering teams to review and refine technical drawings and translate them into robust fabrication processes.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives on tooling and production processes.
  • Oversee technical problem‑solving for complex fabrication or assembly challenges and provide engineered solutions.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Apply expert knowledge of MIG, TIG, and spot welding to support troubleshooting.
  • Develop new weld and 5‑axis fixtures to support new product introduction.
  • Oversee production of additive manufactured checking fixtures.
  • Maintain strong adherence to HSE regulations and ensure all technical processes, tooling, and development work are carried out safely.
  • Act as the primary technical contact for fabrication and tooling issues within the business.
  • Identify and recommend investment in new plant and technology to support growth and improve production efficiency.
Person Requirements

Essential:

  • Demonstrable experience in a manufacturing fabrication environment.
  • Strong CAD/CAM skills with a deep knowledge of automotive fabrication processes including press, 3 & 5‑axis laser cutting, brake press, welding and metal finishing.
  • Ability to interpret and work confidently from complex technical drawings and engineering schematics.
  • Strong understanding of DFM principles, tooling development, and prototype maturation.
  • Excellent knowledge of HSE standards within a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven ability in team leadership, project management and problem solving.

Desirable:

  • Experience leading technical departments or engineering support teams.
  • Exposure to NPI cycles and automotive PPAP processes.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies.
  • CAD/CAM software proficiency.

Reporting Structure
  • The Technical Manager would be overseeing a small fabrication team of 5 members of staff.
  • The Technical Manager would report to the Company CEO.
  • The Technical Manager would liaise with different departments, including Production, Engineering, Quality, and also Account Managers.
Holidays

156 hours per year – equivalent of four‑and‑a‑half weeks (after deductions for bank holidays and Christmas shutdown).
