Job description
Role Overview

The Dreadnought Alliance (DNA) is a collaboration between the Ministry of Defence (MoD), BAE Systems, and Rolls‑Royce. Within the Alliance, the Submarine Systems (SubSys) team operates under the leadership of the Engineering Systems Owner (ESO). We are seeking a Technical Lead to join the Survival Systems Group, which is managed by the Group Manager – Survival. This group is responsible for a range of critical systems, including Fire Fighting, Survival and Escape, Air Purification and Monitoring, and Radiation Monitoring. One Technical Lead, employed by BAE Systems, currently oversees part of these systems; the advertised role will take responsibility for the remaining systems within the group. Upon joining the Alliance, you will receive a comprehensive familiarisation with the Submarine (SM) production environment and gain an understanding of how DNA operates as a Design Authority. Once familiar with our processes and tools, you will be delegated ownership of your assigned systems, with full support available from the Survival Team and the wider SubSys Team. Within six months of joining, you will be expected to complete an Oral Board. This process provides a structured framework – complete with guidance and reference materials – to help you consolidate your knowledge of the Dreadnought Programme and the Alliance's engineering processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Advising the SubSys Engineering System Owner on the approval of the design and build acceptance of Atmosphere management systems (including O2 generation, CO2 removal and CO removal) and Radiation monitoring systems integrated into the Dreadnought Class submarines; advice will be formulated against specified requirements and standards with full cognisance of project time and cost constraints.
  • Delivery of assurance to the Platform Authority, in line with Dreadnought Alliance technical governance, of the capability and performance of the following systems integrated into the Dreadnought Class design:
    • Atmosphere Analyser and atmospheric monitoring systems
    • Air Particle Detector and Direct Gamma Monitoring System
    • Installed RADIAC System
    • Air Purification System
    • Air Purification Revisionary Systems
  • Technical problem solving often coupled with appropriate management planning abilities.
  • Production of technical documents in the assessment of system capability or performance.
  • Undertaking assessments of supportability and maintainability.
  • Providing expert advice and guidance in own technical area to solve complex technical problems and identify risks (candidate can be involved beyond systems related to the role, if experience is held in other areas personnel are encouraged to help out other Technical Leads).
  • Assessing and advising on system design change, defects, contract requirements and management of hazards.
  • Assessing and managing Risks and Opportunities.
  • Maintaining and, when appropriate, writing systems guidance documents in support of projects and industry.
  • Overseeing decisions which will impact the submarine capability in the future, including support, future development and maintainability.
  • Working with stakeholders from both the Dreadnought Alliance and other organisations including ship builder, project planners and other subject matter experts.
  • Ensuring the submarine is safe, delivered on time and to budget on behalf of the customer.
Qualifications & Experience
  • SDA Civil Service Requirements
    • Professionally Registered status or has demonstrated equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
    • Member of a relevant Professional Engineering / Science Institute or equivalent body.

    • Experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes; technical experience in their discipline or specialist area in a variety of contexts.
    • Strong knowledge and engineering experience of atmosphere management systems, preferably relating to submarines (ideal but if candidate can demonstrate ability to learn and work from basic principles this is also acceptable).
    • Strong knowledge and engineering experience of radiation monitoring systems preferably relating to submarines (ideal but if candidate can demonstrate ability to learn and work from basic principles this is also acceptable).
