Job description

Technical Instructor (Sound, Lighting & Live Event Technology)

We are seeking a flexible and adaptable Technical Instructor to support the delivery of practical teaching, specialist lighting technology activity, and live production projects principally within our Sound, Lighting and Live Event Technology course.

This is a growing and industry-connected course focused on the delivery of professional live events, performance technology, and technical production practices, and it is situated within the thriving Faculty of Business & Creative Industries based at our central Cardiff campus. Students develop practical and technical skills across live sound, lighting, video, staging, networking, and event production through a combination of taught sessions, live projects, and industry engagement.

Working as part of a highly skilled team, you will support students and academic staff through the preparation, operation, and maintenance of specialist live event technology systems and learning spaces, with a particular focus on professional lighting systems, control technologies,

and live event production workflows.

The role will involve supporting practical workshops, productions, live events and cross Faculty collaborations whilst ensuring a safe and professional working environment aligned with current live events industry practice.

For an informal conversation about this post please contact Philip Hughes (philip.hughes@southwales.ac.uk) or Lesley Pondevie (lesley.pondevie@southwales.ac.uk)

You will play a key role in supporting industry engagement activities, equipment coordination, live event setup, and student project work across disciplines including lighting control, networking, power distribution, and live production technologies.

Strong team working and communication skills will be essential, alongside the ability to work flexibly across practical teaching environments and live events, and to aid teaching staff with any

reasonable request to support delivery of the curriculum.

This is a 0.6 FTE fixed term post for 12 months, primarily based during term time (September – May), with occasional evening and weekend work required during this time.

This role would particularly suit an experienced live events industry practitioner or freelance technician seeking a flexible role alongside continued professional industry engagement. The University recognises the value of current industry engagement within live event education and

welcomes applications from practitioners actively working within the sector.

If you are a successful candidate and this position will be your first professional services role at the University (or you are currently employed by PSS Ltd), you will be employed by Professional and Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of South Wales, which provides services to the University and Colleges.
