Job description
Overview

Technical Director - Archaeology – Tetra Tech RPS is looking to appoint a Technical Director to our Archaeology Team in Newark. This is in response to a significant increase in workload (due to Government encouragement to Residential development and Renewables). We embrace agile working — where most of the team visit the Newark office one day a week. The successful candidate is likely to be based in the East/South Midlands (where our work stream comes from) and it would be desirable if they could come to the Newark office each Tuesday (open to negotiation).

About the Team

You will be part of a well-established (25 years' plus) heritage team working on many of the biggest and most complicated heritage projects in the country. The bulk of our workload is in response to housing and distribution projects and, we are also increasingly involved in Tetra Tech led schemes for renewable energy, infrastructure etc.

What you will be doing

We pride ourselves on our commercial awareness and on our track record of rapid career progression. If you are ambitious and understand the Government's need to build more houses and to expand our green energy infrastructure - we are the company for you. You have a part to play in delivering these objectives and, you will get to see and influence some great archaeological projects at the same time.

Some key accountabilities include:

  • Preparation of Archaeological DBAs, Environmental Statements and potentially Appeal related documents
  • Project management of a range of projects of different scales across different sectors - ensuring that they advance on time and budget
  • Line management and mentoring of junior staff
  • Business development
  • Liaison with clients, local planning authorities and relevant stakeholders
Who we are looking for

We are open to applications from candidates with an established consultancy background and those with project management experience in archaeological contracting organisations (and elsewhere). You should have the technical experience to be able to provide accurate advice on the archaeological implications of development. You need to be prepared to give clients advice that they don't want (on occasion) and to have the ability to find solutions to complex and seemingly intractable problems.

You should have Associate or full Membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (or be eligible for this), ideally have a relevant degree and a strong knowledge of the planning system.

If you do not tick all of these boxes please do not be dissuaded from applying - we are keen to recruit and to mentor candidates showing the aptitude that we are looking for. Consideration maybe given to appointing applicants with clear potential but lacking the desired experience to be appointed at Associate Director grade.

What happens next?

The Talent Acquisition Team will be in touch to let you know the outcome of your application. If your application is progressed, you will have the opportunity to speak informally with Simon Mortimer to answer any queries in advance of a more formal interview.
