Job description

Teardown Engineer

Red Bull Powertrains is seeking a highly motivated Teardown Engineer to take ownership of the teardown process for our Formula 1 power units. This is a rare opportunity to be part of a team working at the cutting edge of performance engineering, ensuring we maximise learning from every test and race unit. This unique role combines hands-on teardown of Formula 1 power units with materials analysis — closing the loop between component failure and root cause

Based at our state-of-the-art Milton Keynes campus, you will operate across a broad range of power unit hardware, leading investigations and learning capture from used components, and ensuring teardown activities inform future designs and performance decisions. Working across our Teardown and Materials functions, you’ll capture critical data from power unit hardware post-test and apply materials testing methods to support deeper analysis. You’ll liaise with design, quality, testing, and manufacturing teams to feed insights back into performance and reliability development

Key Responsibilities

  • Own tear down delivery: Plan, coordinate, and execute tear down activities for Power Unit assemblies and components, ensuring standard processes are followed and learning opportunities are maximised
  • Pre-strip readiness: Liaise with Design Engineers and Programme Management to pre-populate Tear Down Requests with required inspections, specific checks, and relevant test-run data
  • Data capture & documentation: Develop and maintain the Tear Down Request system and strip-card process (including break-off torque, legality, and measurement data), ensuring consistent, traceable, and accessible results
  • Faults and evidence management: Use outputs from faults meetings and investigations to guide inspection focus. Raise high-quality fault records, ensuring evidence preservation for subsequent analysis
  • Tear down execution: Supervise strip progress, take standardised photographs, collect post-run measurements, and ensure that tear down actions preserve key evidence for engineering review
  • Post-strip reporting: Compile and release tear down reports including run data, images, measurements, oil analysis, and observations, summarising findings and lessons learned
  • Component re-use & archiving: Support definition of re-use criteria, manage the storage and dormancy of parts, and oversee archiving of critical components for future reference
  • Continuous improvement: Work with the Engineering Tools, Methods, and Reliability teams to enhance tear down tools, including photo-capture automation, AI image recognition, and database integration
  • End-of-life and failure review: Lead physical reviews of race and test hardware, facilitating engineering inspections, measurement reviews, and learning capture from EOL and failed parts
  • Health, safety, and quality: Ensure safe working practices during tear down operations, maintaining compliance with RBPT standards and ensuring accuracy in all documentation and measurement activities

Who you are

  • Degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Motorsport Engineering or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Strong understanding of internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid power unit (ERS) components, architecture, and failure modes
  • Hands-on experience in tear down, mechanical inspection, or post-test analysis in a motorsport, automotive, or aerospace environment
  • Detailed and methodical approach to documentation, data handling, and measurement, with high accuracy standards
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability using structured methods (e.g. 8D, 5 Whys)
  • Ability to self-manage workload in a fast-paced environment and adapt to evolving priorities
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across technical teams

Competent in digital tools for reporting, data capture, and image management (e.g. SharePoint, Power BI, Excel, Teamcenter, Epicor, ToolsNet 8, Power Apps, and automated photo-capture or AI recognition tools). Familiarity with fault reporting, root cause analysis (e.g. 8D, 5 Whys) and component reuse criteria is essential. Knowledge of part archiving, end-of-life component procedures and failure investigation processes is also required. This role offers an opportunity to gain broad technical exposure, contribute directly to race-winning performance, and develop insights that truly make a difference. Most importantly, you’ll be part of the team driving our championship-winning cars to success.

We offer a competitive salary, plus:

  • Bonus scheme
  • Private healthcare
  • A pension scheme
  • On-site gym
  • Free daily food allowance
  • And many more!

You will be joining a team that’s as ambitious as it is supportive. If you want to be part of something special, apply now and help shape F1 history.
