Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • To liaise and co-operate with other team leaders to ensure efficient delivery of the service.
  • To direct staff regarding technical and work issues.
  • Discussion of problems and possible solutions with the Lead BMS, and to relay solutions to other members of staff.
  • Dealing with telephone enquiries from nurses, clinicians, healthcare practitioners, giving technical advice on results and use of the service.
  • Liaise by telephone with engineers for analytical equipment to facilitate fault diagnosis and repair or replacement of parts to enable continuation of service if possible without engineers visit.
  • Regularly meet with section staff to discuss current departmental and section issues.
  • Responsible for Inventory management within the section to ensure efficient operation and continuity of service and ensure replenishment of stocks.
  • Assist in the selection of new and replacement equipment.
  • Handle and deal with specimens/samples in a way which:
    • is consistent with the indicated degree of risk or urgency
    • maintains the required quality and integrity
    • maintains their unique identification and their links to relevant records/documentation
    • is appropriate to the nature and stage of the investigation/intervention
Scientific and Technical
  • With the help of research material, publications, relevant professional bodies and other organisations involved in patient safety, advise the directorate about developments and new practices.
  • To evaluate and develop new techniques and equipment.
  • Confirm with relevant information sources: the nature and purpose of the routine biomedical investigations/interventions required and any particular factors to take into account and selects appropriate methods, techniques, processes and equipment.
  • Check and confirm the identify and quality of specimens/samples at all relevant stages in line with established procedures and protocols.

Essential criteria
  • MSC in Biomedical Science or Equivalent
  • IBMS Specialist Portfolio in relevant field or equivalent
  • HCPC registration
  • Biomedical Sciences Degree

  • Management Qualification or equivalent

  • Relevant Highly developed technical and scientific skills in Histology and Dissection
  • Significant experience as a specialist BMS in a clinical UK pathology laboratory
  • Experience of troubleshooting analytical and technical problems
  • Detailed understanding of quality assurance
  • Good knowledge of health and safety regulations and risk assessments
  • Evidence of highly developed written and oral communication skills in a variety of settings.
  • Experience of working within a team
