Job description
Responsibilities
  • Provide oversight and 24‑hour responsibility and accountability for the provision and management of high‑quality nursing care and the treatment of service users within the inpatient service area.
  • Deliver effective clinical leadership to ensure all nursing staff receive the appropriate supervision and support, in conjunction with an agreed professional development plan.
  • Ensure effective nursing assessment and provision of a high standard of care within the inpatient service area.
  • Act as a positive clinical lead and role model within the inpatient service area.
  • Manage and develop the inpatient service team to meet the changing needs of service users, delivering a high‑quality service that works with users and staff to ensure practices respond effectively to both individual and service needs.
  • Establish and maintain team systems and processes for effective operation, including outcome measurements, audit and annual service policy review.
  • Set and monitor care standards for the inpatient service area.
  • Maintain the day‑to‑day running of the service area to a high standard.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with community teams, other agencies and service areas.
  • Ensure sensitive responses by the inpatient service team to the needs of relatives and carers, encouraging their participation in care delivery.
  • Maintain positive working relationships and clear communications with team members and other professionals.
  • Enhance public relations by taking active steps to project a positive image of service users, the service and the Trust.

You will be an inclusive and compassionate clinical leader, committed to delivering personalised, high‑quality care to women accessing acute inpatient support, and to ensuring their families and carers feel involved, reassured and heard.

Requirements
  • Registered Nurse (RNMH/RNLD/RMN) with appropriate UK professional registration.
  • Degree with experience of postgraduate level study or equivalent experience.
  • ENB 998/Mentorship.
  • Evidence of management or leadership development.
  • NMC membership.
  • Teaching/training experience, management of staff in a multiprofessional setting.
  • Strong post‑registration experience, including as a band 6.
  • Detailed awareness of issues in inpatient service areas – legislation, DoH guidance, NPSA, PEAT, CQC, NHSLA, Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act including an understanding of standards.
  • Ability to provide clinical supervision, appraisal, preceptorship and staff support methods.
  • Knowledge of current developments in mental health or learning disabilities care.
  • Candidates requiring a Skilled Worker visa to work in the United Kingdom must assess their eligibility according to the UK visa criteria.
Desirable Criteria
  • Experience of working in other care settings.
  • Recognises and reflects on barriers to effective communication, modifying communication in response.
  • De‑escalation skills for managing verbal aggression of disturbed service users.
  • Keeps accurate and complete records and maintains communication consistent with legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates good verbal presentation skills.
  • Ability to chair meetings effectively and demonstrate good decision‑making skills.
  • Flexible and responsive approach to care.
  • Knowledge and ability to positively manage change.
  • Ability to identify and manage changes to clinical risks.
  • Ability to produce reports e.g., related to complaints, investigations, SIs, audits, etc.
  • Able to manage a budget effectively.
