Job description

Role: Teaching Assistant (Moderate Learning Difficulties Resource Base)
Location: St Marks School, Bath
Contract Type: Temporary (based on funding)
Start Date: Monday 12th January 2026
End Date: Monday 31st August 2026
Interview Date: TBC
Hours: 30 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 - 3pm
Salary: Grade 3 and scale point range 5-7. Actual salary £17,821 - £18,393 (Full Time Equivalent £25,583 - £26,403)

We are seeking an outstanding Teaching Assistant to support students in our MLD Resource Base, Orchard Lodge. Applications are welcome from candidates with sufficient SEND experience, particularly in the provision of students with Moderate Learning Difficulties. This is a unique opportunity to work across both the resource base and the main school lessons to support students to reach their maximum potential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out the requirements of the pupils EHCP.
  • Attend to the pupils’ personal needs, and implement related personal programmes, including social, health, physical, hygiene, and first aid and welfare matters, as appropriate.
  • Supervise and support pupils ensuring their safety and access to learning.
  • Assist with the development of student profiles and target action plans.
  • Develop a good knowledge of pupils’ individual special educational needs and implement appropriate strategies as outlined on the students’ profile.
  • Establish constructive relationships with pupils, act as a role model, and interact with them according to individual needs.
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher.
  • Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence.
  • Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under guidance of the teacher.
  • To provide pastoral support for pupils under the supervision of the tutor Base Lead.
Qualifications and Experience

To be able to demonstrate a good standard of education, holding Level 2 qualifications in literacy and numeracy (GCSE or equivalent).

Applicants should also have experience working with or caring for children of the relevant age group in either a paid, voluntary, or domestic environment, and be able to demonstrate an understanding of child development and the wide range of factors affecting children’s education and welfare.

Applicants should be able to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a team, with an understanding of classroom roles, responsibilities, and their own position within them.

In addition, you should have either:

  • NVQ Level 2 for Teaching Assistants (or an equivalent qualification/experience) and completion of the DfES Teaching Assistant Induction Programme.
  • A minimum of three years’ relevant and satisfactory experience as a Teaching Assistant/Learning Support Assistant, demonstrating an appropriate skill level, along with a willingness to complete the Teaching Assistant Induction Programme and pursue further recognised or relevant qualifications as noted above.
