Job summary

The Suthers School, part of Nova Education Trust, is seeking a proactive Teaching Assistant to join a warm and supportive environment where every staff member contributes to student experience.

You will support pupils with learning activities, assist teachers, and contribute to safeguarding and student development as part of a committed team. This permanent, full-time role runs term-time with a range of benefits including pension, healthcare and CPD.

Responsibilities

  • Provide teaching support to allocated pupils by implementing learning activities as directed by or alongside the class teacher to support progression.
  • Set appropriate expectations and clear targets, building on prior attainment.
  • Maintain pace, motivation and challenge in lesson support; ensure effective use of time.
  • Monitor and intervene to ensure sound learning and discipline.
  • Assist with planning cycles and resource preparation under supervision.
  • Promote good behaviour and inclusive practice, supporting pupils with special needs.
  • Assist with development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans and Personal Care programmes.
  • Provide feedback to pupils on progress under teacher guidance.

Salary: Scale 4 (£26,403 to £27,269 pro-rata, £22,671 to £24,164 actual per year)

Contract: Permanent, full-time, term-time only

The Suthers School are looking to appoint an approachable and talented Teaching Assistant to join a warm and compassionate environment where every staff member makes a significant contribution to the experience of our students.

Key Responsibilities

Provide teaching support to allocated pupils by implementing learning activities as directed by or alongside the class teacher to support progression by:

  • setting appropriate expectations
  • setting clear targets, building on prior attainment
  • provide clear structures for lesson support maintaining pace, motivation and challenge.
  • ensure effective support and best use of available time.
  • monitor and intervene to ensure sound learning and discipline.
  • ensure effective support so that pupils acquire and consolidate knowledge, skills and understanding appropriate to the subject taught.
  • work under the guidance of teaching/senior staff and within an agreed system of supervision, to implement agreed work programmes with individuals/groups, in or out of the classroom. This could include those requiring detailed and specialist knowledge in particular areas and will involve assisting the teacher in the whole planning cycle and the management/ preparation of resources.
  • promote good behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour; Support the pupil by:
  • undertaking the activities with either individuals or groups of children to ensure their safety and facilitate their physical, emotional and educational development.
  • working to establish a supportive relationship with the children and parents concerned.
  • encouraging acceptance and inclusion of the child with special needs.
  • promoting and reinforcing a positive self-esteem.
  • assisting with the development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans and Personal Care programmes.
  • providing feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under guidance of the teacher. Monitoring, assessment, recording, reporting.
  • demonstrate and consistently maintain a commitment to the school’s mission and to its values and ethos.
  • have a working knowledge of teaching assistants’ professional duties and legal liabilities.
  • operate at all times within the stated policies and practices of the school
  • establish effective working relationships and set a good example through their presentation and personal and professional conduct
  • being aware of confidential issues linked to home/pupil/teacher/schoolwork and to keep confidences as appropriate.
  • take responsibility for their own professional development and duties in relation to school policies and practices.
  • take on any additional responsibilities which might from time to time be determined.
  • attend and participate in relevant meetings as required
