SEN Teaching Assistant

  • Location: Chatham
  • Job Type: Full-time
  • Hours: 08:15 AM to 3:30 PM

We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join our SEMH Special School, part of a Multi-Academy Trust, catering to children with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs. Our students, who have EHCPs, often exhibit challenging behaviour and have experienced disrupted education. With small classes and a committed staff, we aim to provide every student with the opportunity to succeed and make positive life changes.

Day to Day of the Role:

  • Work under the guidance of teaching/senior staff within an agreed system of supervision to implement work programmes and enable access to learning for individuals or groups, both in and out of the classroom.
  • Plan and administer intervention work with children in small groups or on a 1:2:1 basis as required.
  • Assist the teacher in the whole planning cycle and the management/preparation of resources.
  • Support students in taking responsibility for their behaviour and understanding the consequences of their actions.
  • Help instil values of tolerance and respect in students towards themselves and others.
  • Collaborate with parents, carers, and other agencies to support each student’s positive choices and changes.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children with SEMH needs or in a similar setting.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by students with disrupted education and behavioural issues.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and under the guidance of teaching staff.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a commitment to student development and education.
