Second in Science (KS4 & KS5 Focus)

Salary: TLR 2B

About the Role

We're seeking an ambitious and motivated Second in Science to join a thriving department and take a lead role across Key Stages 4 and 5. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Science teacher who is ready to step up, develop leadership experience, and make a real impact on teaching and learning.

You will work closely with the Head of Science to support staff development, raise achievement, and enhance the Science curriculum for all learners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Head of Science in leading the department and driving standards across KS4 & KS5.
  • Lead on assessment, tracking and monitoring pupil progress to ensure all students achieve their potential.
  • Identify underachievement and implement effective intervention strategies.
  • Develop and refine curriculum resources for GCSE and post-16 Science.
  • Organise and coordinate after-school revision and enrichment sessions.
  • Model excellent teaching practice and support colleagues in improving pedagogy.
  • Contribute to curriculum planning from KS3 through KS5.
  • Support the induction, mentoring, and professional development of departmental staff.
  • Line manage Science technicians and oversee their performance and recruitment.
  • Take responsibility for the department in the absence of the Head of Science.
  • Contribute to departmental improvement planning, evaluation, and resource management.
  • Monitor and evaluate teaching quality through lesson observations and data analysis.
  • Promote a safe, well-organised, and inspiring learning environment in Science labs.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, staff, and students to support progress and wellbeing.
  • Uphold the highest standards of teaching, learning, and safeguarding.
Person Specification
Essential:
  • Degree in a relevant Science subject.
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
  • Proven record of success in teaching KS4 and/or KS5 Science.
  • Strong subject knowledge and understanding of effective teaching for learning.
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to teamwork, innovation, and raising student achievement.
  • Enthusiasm, flexibility, and passion for Science education.
Desirable:
  • Experience in curriculum development or departmental leadership.
  • Master's degree or further professional qualifications.
  • Familiarity with digital learning tools (e.g. Google Workspace for Education).
