Job description

Exeter School is the leading co‑educational day school in the Southwest, educating over 1,000 pupils aged 3‑18. We are looking to appoint a fixed term, part‑time (circa 60 %) Teacher of PE to join our school, a school of great character. This post is available for six or twelve‑month period from January 2026.

We are seeking a well‑qualified and enthusiastic teacher in this thriving and successful team. This part‑time role would suit either a recently qualified teacher or a more experienced applicant. Please note applicants will have an allocation of both Saturday and evening fixtures.

The PE department is made up of nine full‑time and two part‑time physical education teachers who are supported by members of academic staff in coaching games and a number of external coaches. All members of the department are expected to teach across all three sections of the school: pre‑prep (reception – Yr. 2), junior school (Yrs. 3‑6) and senior school (Yrs. 7‑13).

Applicants should be able to teach PE and Games across Years 3–13 and confidently deliver a range of sports and curriculum activities. Experience and enthusiasm for coaching our core girls’ sports—hockey, tennis, netball and cricket—are essential. The role includes contributing to the wider sports programme at lunchtimes, after school and at weekends, as well as organising tennis fixtures in the summer term. It also involves providing visible lunchtime supervision to support pupil safety.

Pupils at Exeter School have timetabled PE and Games from Year 3–9, with curriculum games continuing through Years 10–13. Our extensive extra‑curricular programme includes lunchtime and after‑school clubs, specialist sessions and regular fixtures. We field competitive teams in hockey, netball and cricket for girls, and rugby, hockey and cricket for boys, alongside squads in athletics, cross country, football, swimming and squash. Matches take place during the week and at weekends, with opportunities for all pupils through block fixtures and house competitions. Facilities include 25 acres of playing fields, a floodlit astro, swimming pool, sports hall, and a refurbished gym, studio and aerobics room.

The role will attract a competitive salary as well as generous benefits including employer pension contribution, free school lunch during term time, free on‑site parking, discretionary staff discount on school fees and use of indoor swimming pool and fitness suite.

The closing date for applications is noon on Wednesday 3 December 2025. We anticipate that interviews will be held on Thursday 11 December 2025.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service. Employment is subject to the receipt of two satisfactory references provided specifically for this post and addressed to the school, and to satisfactory DBS clearance.
