JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

TEACHERS’ (TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT) REGULATIONS (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5

  1. Exercise of general professional duties - A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require:
    • If he/she is employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal of that school;
    • If he/she is employed by a board on terms under which he is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school in which he/she may for the time being be required to work as a teacher.
  2. Exercise of particular duties
    • A teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) in a school shall perform, in accordance with any directions which may be reasonably given to him/her by the principal from time to time, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned to him/her.
    • A teacher to whom paragraph 1(b) refers shall perform, in accordance with any direction which may reasonably be given to him/her from time to time by the board or by the principal of any school in which he/she may for the time being be required to work as a teacher, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned to him/her.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Planning
    • Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
    • Teaching according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work for pupils in school and elsewhere;
    • Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
  2. General
    • Promoting the general progress and well‑being of pupils and classes;
    • Providing advice and guidance to pupils on educational, social matters and future careers, including information on further advice sources and record‑keeping;
    • Making records of personal and social needs of pupils as required;
    • Communicating and consulting with parents;
    • Communicating and co‑operating with external persons or bodies approved by the employing authority and the Board of Governors;
    • Participating in relevant meetings.
  3. Assessment / Reporting
    • Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to pupils and groups, subject to safeguarding considerations.
  4. Staff Development / Professional Development
    • Participating, where required, in staff development schemes and performance reviews;
    • Reviewing teaching methods and programmes; engaging in further training;
    • Advising and co‑operating with the Principal and colleagues on course development, teaching materials, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
  5. Discipline / Health and Safety
    • Maintaining order and discipline among pupils in line with the employing authority’s policies and safeguarding health and safety on school premises and during off‑site activities;
    • Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral functions.
  6. Public Examinations
    • Preparing pupils for public examinations; assessing and recording such assessments; supervising pupil presentation during examinations.
  7. Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration
    • Contributing to selection, induction and assessment of other teachers, including probationary teachers;
    • Coordinating or managing other teachers’ work; participating in curriculum, organisation and pastoral management;
    • Performing administrative tasks, supervising support staff, ordering and allocating equipment and materials;
    • Attending assemblies and supervising attendance as required.
  8. Number of days / Hours of work
    • Full‑time teachers (non‑residential) are expected to work 195 days per year, with no more than 190 days teaching in classroom situations;
    • Teachers may be required to work 1,265 hours per year, excluding time spent off‑premises preparing and marking lessons and travelling;
    • Teaching or supervising limits:
      • Primary or special schools – no more than 25 hours per week.
      • Secondary schools – no more than 23.5 hours per week.
    • Mid‑day supervision and other specific breaks are outlined in the regulations.
  9. Staff cover
    • Supervising and teaching pupils whose teacher is unavailable under specified enrolment conditions, as described in the regulations.

SECTION 1 – ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (Shortlisting Stage)

Qualifications / Professional Membership

  • Hold a teaching qualification recognized for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification that has prepared the applicant to teach Physical Education as the main subject.
  • Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.

Experience

  • Minimum of 6 months’ demonstrable experience teaching Physical Education at Key Stage 3.
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience teaching Physical Education at Key Stage 4 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience of differentiating lessons and using a range of teaching strategies to meet pupils’ learning needs.
SECTION 2 – ESSENTIAL CRITERIA (Interview Stage)

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet pupils’ learning needs.
  • Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools and mobile technologies.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.

Skills / Abilities

  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils.
  • Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the wider community.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and to motivate self and others.

SECTION 3 – DESIRABLE CRITERIA

Qualifications and Experience

  • Hold a relevant netball or hockey coaching qualification.
  • Minimum of 1 year’s demonstrable experience teaching Physical Education at Key Stage 3 or 4 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
