Job description

Starting from September 2026

We are seeking an enthusiastic, ambitious and dedicated Teacher of Mathematics to join our high‑achieving Mathematics department at Reading School.

This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate mathematician who can deliver engaging, challenging and well‑structured lessons across Years 7 to 13. An eagerness to teach the subject at A Level is essential and we would welcome candidates who have an interest in teaching A Level Further Maths.

The successful candidate will be joining an exceptional team and a school that is passionate about Mathematics as a subject; the Mathematics Department is a crucial part of our commitment to being a world‑leading institution. Mathematics is the most popular subject in the school at A Level, with approximately 170 students studying A Level Mathematics in both year groups, of whom around 70 also take Further Maths.

All KS4 students study Higher GCSE Edexcel, with approximately 90 students also taking the OCR freestanding additional mathematics qualification. Years 7 and 8 follow the national curriculum with students given the opportunity to apply their knowledge through problem‑solving challenges.

We encourage all students to participate in the UKMT Mathematics Challenges and regularly have students qualifying for the follow‑on rounds. This is made possible by our teachers providing an environment in which students are encouraged to think and problem‑solve creatively.

Candidate Profile
  • Has a strong subject knowledge and genuine enthusiasm for Mathematics.
  • Is an excellent classroom practitioner and has the ability to inspire and motivate students of all abilities.
  • Is committed to high academic standards and to nurturing every student’s potential.
  • Has experience of teaching A Level Mathematics, for ECT's this could be during training.

This post would suit either an experienced teacher looking for a new challenge, or an ECT seeking to begin their career in a highly supportive and academically stimulating environment.

At Reading School, we have a clear educational philosophy and a deeply rooted commitment to social mobility. In all we do we seek to nurture character and develop academic excellence, and we know that what we do really matters. More than 10% of our Year 7 students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and we are proud of the difference that we make. In 2025, the school was rated the Sunday Times South East State School of the Year.

We are a short walk from central Reading and close to transport links. Reading is a diverse place to live with arts, culture and heritage at the heart of the town.

This is a full‑time teaching position. Pay scale dependent on experience, Reading School Teacher Payscale RSTP 1 to 9 (M1 to UPS3). Deadline for Applications: Wednesday 7 January 2026
