Job description

The Tax Department reports to the Chief Financial Officer and is in charge of all tax related matters including tax structuring, tax compliance, tax planning and tax accounting.

We are looking for an experienced counsel, or SVP, of tax structuring to join our London office and oversee a variety of tax matters for our EMEA funds and investors. This role will sit within the wider Finance team and report to the Head of Tax in NYC.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to strategic growth and market presence through collaboration with internal teams including legal and compliance, portfolio managers, and product development teams to develop tax efficient strategies to optimise investment returns.

  • Advise on new products, funds and investment mandates to ensure appropriate structuring for the investor base; this includes addressing tax costs, risks and opportunities within the structure.

  • Review tax aspects of fund documents, transaction agreements and side letters.

  • Collaborate on complex cross border investments involving multiple jurisdictions and help identify tax implications.

  • Research and analyse complex tax matters and provide recommendations to address specific tax needs.

  • Provide tax risk assessments for initiatives presented to investment committees.

  • Assist with responding to due diligence queries, RFPs, and liaising with investor services on tax inquiries raised by investors.

  • Provide tax audit support for the EMEA region; and build and maintain relationships with tax departments of peer organizations and industry groups.

  • Develop policies and procedures, scalable tax processes and ensure quality control of all tax related matters; ensure that relevant teams adhere to such policies, procedures and processes.

  • Collaborate on M&A and/or strategic initiatives within the EMEA region.

  • Monitor tax-related initiatives and other global tax landscape/legislative changes with a focus on EU and provide commentary to relevant business leaders, such as OECD Pillar Two.

  • Manage the relationship with outside counsels and advisors across the EMEA region.

Qualifications and Experience
  • 10+ years of experience in fund tax structuring.

  • Experience with law firm or Big 4 Accounting firm and have professional qualifications such as being admitted as a solicitor, a chartered tax adviser (CTA) and/or a chartered accountant (ACA, ACCA).

  • Must be comfortable managing the intricacies of fund formation, carry planning, transfer pricing, withholding tax, VAT/GST/Sales taxes and global mobility.

  • Background in international tax laws in EMEA countries preferred, including knowledge of tax compliance to oversee the compliance outsourced to a Big 4 Accounting Firm.

  • Experience with both public and private funds.

  • Commercial and strategic with strong technical expertise and business acumen.

  • Collaborative with a strong sense of accountability to see projects through completion – In addition to being a strategic tax advisor, a focus on execution and desire to own the tax function end-to-end in the region are critical skills for this role.

  • Self-motivated team player with strong organizational skills and work ethic who can work independently with other functions in the firm as well as external advisors.

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with people from multi-functional and diverse backgrounds.

  • Ability to effectively analyze, organize, and prioritize workflow according to internal and external deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • An understanding of US tax considerations and concepts would be preferable but not essential.
