Job description

System Technician - Rolling Stock

Location: Leicester
Contract: Permanent
Shift Pattern: As part of a team providing 24/7 maintenance support, you will work a rotating shift pattern covering days, nights, weekdays and weekends.

No rail experience? No problem.

We are recruiting a System Technician to join a leading rolling stock maintenance company in Leicester, providing high-level technical support across the maintenance, fault diagnosis and performance of a modern rolling-stock fleet.

Previous rail or rolling-stock experience is not essential. Full training on the fleet, systems and maintenance requirements will be provided.

We are particularly interested in hearing from experienced electrical, mechanical or multi-skilled technicians from other complex engineering and maintenance environments, including:

  • Military / Armed Forces engineering
  • Automotive
  • Aerospace
  • Rail and rolling stock
  • Heavy engineering
  • Manufacturing and automated production
  • Plant and heavy equipment
  • Bus, coach or commercial vehicle maintenance
  • Marine engineering
  • Power generation and utilities
  • Other safety-critical maintenance environments

If you have strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills and are comfortable working with complex electrical, electronic and mechanical systems, your experience could be highly transferable.

The Role

This is more than a routine preventative maintenance position.

As a System Technician, you'll operate as a technical problem-solver, investigating complex faults, identifying root causes and helping ensure the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the fleet.

You'll develop knowledge across a wide range of train systems, including high and low voltage systems, TCMS, propulsion, safety systems and associated electrical, electronic, mechanical and software systems.

Full training will be provided to develop your knowledge of the trains and their associated systems, making this an excellent opportunity for experienced technicians looking to transfer their skills into the rail industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out complex fault finding, diagnosis and repair across rolling-stock systems.
  • Investigate in-service defects, repeat failures and technical incidents to identify root causes and appropriate corrective actions.
  • Perform functional testing across mechanical, electrical, electronic and software-based systems.
  • Interpret electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics to support fault diagnosis and repair.
  • Monitor train and system performance, identifying trends and opportunities to improve reliability.
  • Provide technical support to depot maintenance and production teams.
  • Support investigations into reliability, availability and safety-related incidents.
  • Produce clear technical reports covering defects, investigations, repairs and recommendations.
  • Support post-incident testing, technical investigations and modifications.
  • Investigate recurring failures and contribute to improvements in fleet performance.
  • Develop specialist knowledge of designated train systems.
  • Provide technical support, coaching and mentoring to colleagues.
  • Support the implementation of engineering changes and modifications.
  • Carry out secondary checks of safety-critical work where required.
  • Identify technical and operational risks and recommend appropriate mitigation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement focused on safety, reliability, availability and maintenance performance.
About You

We're looking for someone with a strong technical maintenance background. You do not necessarily need previous rail experience.

You’ll ideally have:
  • A recognised electrical, electronic, mechanical or multi-skilled engineering apprenticeship, supported by City & Guilds, BTEC, NVQ or equivalent technical qualifications/experience.
  • Hands-on experience within a maintenance, service, engineering or fault-finding environment.
  • Strong practical experience with fault finding, diagnostics and problem solving.
  • Experience working with complex electrical, electronic and/or mechanical systems.
  • The ability to read and interpret electrical or mechanical drawings and schematics.
  • Experience investigating equipment failures and identifying root causes.
  • A good understanding of engineering safety, risk and safe systems of work.
  • The ability to approach technical problems logically and work independently.
  • Good communication and technical reporting skills.
  • Basic IT competence and the ability to use digital maintenance and reporting systems.
  • A collaborative approach and willingness to share knowledge and support colleagues.
  • The flexibility to work a 24/7 rotating shift pattern, including days, nights and weekends.
Transfer Your Skills Into Rail

You may currently be working as a:

Aircraft Technician Aircraft Engineer REME Technician RAF Technician Royal Navy Engineer Automotive Technician Diagnostic Technician HGV Technician PSV Technician Maintenance Technician Electrical Technician LeicesterMulti-Skilled Maintenance Engineer Service Engineer Plant Technician Rolling Stock Technician Train Technician

What matters most is your ability to understand complex systems, diagnose faults, interpret technical information and safely carry out repairs.

If you have those fundamentals, full training will be provided to help you transfer your existing engineering skills into a rolling-stock environment.

The Opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced technician who wants to develop their career within the rail industry.

You’ll receive training on the fleet and its systems while applying the engineering and diagnostic skills you’ve already developed in your current industry.

You’ll become a technical problem-solver within the depot, supporting difficult faults and repeat failures, establishing why issues have occurred and helping develop solutions to prevent recurrence.

You’ll also have the opportunity to develop specialist knowledge of individual train systems and work alongside production, engineering and performance teams to improve safety, reliability and fleet availability.

If you’re an experienced technician from rail, military, aerospace, automotive or another complex maintenance environment, we’d be keen to hear from you.
