Job summary

Costain Group is seeking a Systems Engineer (Requirements & Configuration) to elicit, analyse and document the Package 3 HS2 Rail Systems contract requirements, lead change and configuration management, and collaborate with design teams across the project.

You will develop and apply requirements management and configuration management processes, allocate requirements to asset level specifications, and prepare verification documents to support design assurance on a major UK infrastructure

Qualifications

  • Experienced in using DOORS to manage project requirements.
  • Experience applying configuration/change management in major projects.
  • High standard of verbal and written communication; able to convey concepts to varied audiences.
  • Strong information management and analytical skills for extracting pertinent points from large datasets.
  • Collaborative working with project teams and stakeholders at all levels.

Responsibilities

  • Elicit, understand, analyse, and document the requirements for Package 3 of the HS2 Rail Systems Contracts.
  • Lead the change and configuration management to manage the technical change process and maintain configuration management.
  • Develop Requirements Management, Configuration/Change Management processes and procedures.
  • Apply RM/CM plans to elicit, analyse, record and verify/validate requirements.
  • Apply the Configuration Management Plan and processes on the Package 3 contract.
  • Produce and submit Verification & Validation Matrices (VVMs) and Configuration Status Reports (CSRs).
  • Report on the performance of RM, Verification & Validation, and Configuration Management processes.
  • Maintain the Change Management process, including registers.
  • Drive innovation in RM and CM approaches.
  • Prepare and deliver training to promote awareness of RM/CM processes.
  • Foster collaborative working within the team and with HS2 SMEs.

Job Description

HS2 is Great Britain's new high-speed railway. Once operational, HS2's trains will provide journeys between Birmingham and London, with services continuing on to Manchester, the Northwest and Scotland using the conventional railway. The new route comprises 140-miles of track, four stations, two depots, 32 miles of tunnel, and 130 bridges. The first HS2 services will run between Birmingham Curzon Street and Old Oak Common in London between 2029 and 2033.

HS2 are in the process of procuring c12 railway systems contracts, in excess of £4b, for the design, supply, construction, test & commissioning and maintenance for the route between London and Birmingham

Costain has successfully awarded 2 of these packages worth multiple hundreds of £millions:

  • Package 2: Tunnel and Lineside Mechanical & Electrical Fitout
  • Package 3: High Voltage Traction and Non-Traction Power Distribution
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Systems Integration and Assurance Manager, the Systems Engineer (Requirements & Configuration) works with the project engineering and design teams and other specialists to:

  • Elicit, understand, analyse, and document the requirements for Package 3 of the HS2 Rail Systems Contracts.
  • leading the change and configuration management, to manage the technical change process across the Package 3 of the HS2 Rail Systems Contracts and maintain configuration management
  • Developing the Requirements Management processes, Configuration / Change Management processes and procedures in line with both the Costain and Client (HS2) requirements.
  • Ensuring the application of the Requirements Management Plan and processes to elicit, analyse, record and verify / validate the requirements of the Package 3 Rail Systems contract for HS2.
  • Ensuring the application of the Configuration Management Plan and processes on the Package 3 Rail Systems contract for HS2.
  • Working with design teams subcontractors and subject matter experts to allocate requirements to Asset level requirements specification and to determine the relevant appropriate verification and validation activities.
  • Production and submissions of Verification Validation Matrices (VVM's) and Configuration Status Reports (CSR's) to support the technical design assurance process.
  • Reporting on the performance of the Requirements Management, Verification & Validation process as well as Configuration Management.
  • Maintain the Change Management process, including maintaining change and configuration registers.
  • Driving innovation in the requirements management and configuration management approach.
  • Prepare and deliver training and briefings to promote awareness of the requirements, configuration / change management process and activities within the project team.
  • Fostering collaborative working within the team and the project team through data base management, team integration and workflows.
  • Collaborative working within the HS2 Subject Matter Experts as required, and credible in building relationships.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
Essential
  • Experienced in the use of DOORS to manage project requirements
  • Experience of the application of configuration / change management processes in major projects
  • High standard of verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, able to effectively communicate concepts to variety of audiences
  • Good information management and analytical skills, able to quickly and efficiently seek out the relevant and pertinent points from large volumes of project information
  • Capable of working collaboratively and effectively with project delivery teams, management and the project leadership and credible in building relationships with all levels of stakeholders
Desirable
  • Previous experience of working on large infrastructure projects, multidisciplinary teams, in particular experience in civil engineering or rail would be an advantage
Qualifications
Essential
  • Appropriate professional qualification or equivalent experience in System Engineering
