Job summary

A leading global engineering firm is seeking Systems and Senior Systems Engineers for their Fusion and Modular Nuclear Business Unit in Sunderland, UK. You'll engage in developing Nuclear Fusion technologies for net-zero power generation. Responsibilities include creating system architectures, ensuring project coordination, and implementing MBSE approaches. The role requires a degree in Systems Engineering or related fields, along with relevant industry experience. This position offers hybrid work options and attractive benefits.

Qualifications

  • Background in nuclear fusion or regulated industries.
  • Working experience of Health and Safety and QA standards.
  • Experience through the full project life cycle.
  • Extensive knowledge of power plant design, UK codes, standards, regulations, and operational requirements.
  • Working experience of Health and Safety, Quality Assurance standards, CDM regulations, and NBS.
  • Systems engineering through the full project life cycle from initial proposal through requirements development, design, testing, qualification, certification, and production release phases.
  • Proven ability to coordinate a highly skilled technical workforce to produce products that meet quality, safety, and performance requirements.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
  • Ability to work with a multi‑national team and to maintain respect and confidence of all stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Create artefacts like operational concepts and system architectures.
  • Support integrated technical management and respond to queries.
  • Report on deliverable progress and recommend resource levels.
  • Liaise with all disciplines to ensure coordination of the design.
  • Apply systems engineering best practices and approaches to grow the systems engineering capability within the engineering team.
  • Develop and propose an MBSE approach.
  • Report to Project Lead Engineer (Systems and Integration) with deliverable progress updates and resource level recommendations.

Skills

Degree qualified or equivalent in Systems Engineering or other technical fields
Extensive subject-specific knowledge of power plant design
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to work with a multi-national team

🚀 Join the Fusion and Modular Nuclear Business Unit! 🚀Assystem has an exciting opportunity for Systems and Senior Systems Engineers to join our expanding Fusion and Modular Nuclear (FMN) business unit. As leaders in the design and development of new technologies, you will have the opportunity to work across multiple cutting‑edge projects developing Nuclear Fusion technologies making net‑zero power generation a reality.

As a valued and integrated member of the FMN team, the role of Systems/Senior Engineer will include:

  • 🛠️ Create or coordinate the creation of artefacts such as the operations concept, functional and system architectures, requirement and compliance statements, verification and validation planning, optioneering assessments, design risk assessments (safety and CDM).
  • 📝 Support integrated technical management (technical and project risks and issues, technical assumptions, design configuration, breakdown structure development).
  • ❓ Respond to technical queries as required.
  • 🔗 Liaise with all disciplines to ensure coordination of the design.
  • 💡 Apply systems engineering best practices and approaches to grow the systems engineering capability within the engineering team.
  • 📈 Develop and propose an MBSE approach.
  • 📊 Report to Project Lead Engineer (Systems and Integration) with deliverable progress updates and resource level recommendations.

Qualifications
  • 🎓 Degree qualified or equivalent in Systems Engineering or other technical fields.
  • 🏭 Background in nuclear fusion, nuclear sector, or regulated industries like thermal power generation, oil and gas.
  • 🔄 Whole life‑cycle experience is essential.
  • 📚 Extensive subject‑specific knowledge of power plant design, UK codes, standards, regulations, and operational requirements.
  • ⚖️ Working experience of Health and Safety, Quality Assurance standards, CDM regulations, and NBS.
