Job description

As a Control & Protection Engineer for HVDC Studies you will work within a team of HVDC project management and engineering specialists to design and deliver full HVDC control and protection solutions for both wind farm grid connections and interconnectors making use of a new transient network analysis laboratory located in Manchester. You will report to the Engineering Manager - HVDC C&P and will be required to provide engineering work packages in line with project and business objectives. How You'll Make an Impact

Responsibilities
  • Dynamic performance studies within tender and project execution of HVDC projects
  • Optimizing the dynamic behaviour of the HVDC converter (e.g., black‑start and network restoration, grid forming controls, multi‑terminal systems) according to customer and national grid code requirements
  • Analysing sub‑synchronous torsional/control interactions and the harmonic converter impedance, as well as potential interactions between the HVDC converter and other controlled devices in the power system
  • Developing and validating simulation models for diverse EMT simulation tools (e.g., PSCAD/EMTDC, Matlab/Simulink, EMTP‑RV)
  • Customer trainings for simulation models and presentation of study results to customer
  • Continuous improvement and standardization of simulation models, study procedures and methods, processes in project execution as well as documentation of results
  • Supporting the project management in technical discussions, participating in customer meetings, and coordinating external partners
Qualifications
  • University degree in electrical power engineering or control engineering in combination with a PhD degree and experience in power engineering industry
  • Good knowledge in high voltage applications, power transmission systems, power electronics and HVDC technology
  • Expertise in control engineering and modelling of HVDC systems in the time domain and frequency domain
  • Professional user of typical power system simulation programs (e.g., PSCAD/EMTDC, Matlab/Simulink, EMTP‑RV)
  • Fluent English mandatory (spoken and written), German preferable
  • Outstanding team skills, initiative, and customer orientation
