Switchboard Operator

Location: Ulster Hospital
Hours: Shift work – mainly 8am–4pm & 2pm–10pm, Monday–Sunday, with occasional night duty. Includes weekends, bank holidays, and Christmas holidays.
Pay: £12.31 - £20.80 per hour
Contract: 4 Months

About the Role:

The South Eastern HSC Trust is seeking dedicated and professional Switchboard Operators to join our team, providing a vital 24/7 service across multiple Trust sites including the Ulster Hospital, Lagan Valley Hospital, Downe Hospital, Downshire Hospital, Newtownards Hospital, and Lisburn Primary Community Care Centre.

As the first point of contact for both internal and external calls, you will play a key role in ensuring prompt, efficient, and professional communication. You will also be responsible for responding to emergency situations, including Major Incidents, Bomb Alerts, Cardiac Arrests, and Fire/Gas/Intruder/Panic Alarms.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate the Trust telephone systems, responding to calls promptly and professionally.
  • Prioritise and manage tasks in emergencies or high-pressure situations.
  • Provide sensitive information with empathy and tact to staff, patients, and the public.
  • Implement Major Incident Response Procedures and maintain accurate logs during emergencies.
  • Operate communication applications, issue and manage pagers, and test internal communication pathways.
  • Respond to fire, duress, and medical alarms, liaising with relevant departments and emergency services.
  • Maintain stock levels, telephone directories, on‑call rotas, and accurate records for auditing purposes.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team, or independently when required.
What We’re Looking For:
  • Four GCSEs (A‑C) including English and Maths, or equivalent experience in a switchboard, call centre, or clerical environment.
  • Minimum 1–2 years relevant experience handling difficult callers, emergency calls, or working under pressure.
  • Excellent communication, multitasking, problem‑solving, attention to detail, and strong clerical/administrative skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
