Job summary

County Durham Council is seeking a Waste Projects Officer to design, promote and deliver waste prevention, reuse, recycling and composting initiatives across the county. You will work with communities, schools and partner organisations, monitor outcomes and report on performance to help improve environmental metrics.

The role requires experience in waste management, strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, including public-facing events and education

Qualifications

  • Experience delivering waste prevention, reuse, recycling and composting projects.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of waste management services, legislation and policy.
  • Experience of stakeholder engagement and partnership working.
  • Strong project and time management skills.
  • Report writing and data analysis experience.
  • Confident presenting and leading public-facing events.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
  • A genuine passion for environmental improvement and sustainability.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop and deliver waste management projects and campaigns.
  • Monitor project performance and evaluate outcomes.
  • Prepare reports and share best practice to improve environmental performance.
  • Represent the Council at meetings, events and stakeholder forums.
  • Deliver community engagement activities, roadshows and educational events.
  • Work with community groups, schools and partner organisations.
  • Identify and pursue external funding opportunities and awards.
  • Promote key waste management messages at a local level.
  • Research best practice and benchmark against other local authorities.
