Job summary

Hoare Lea, a leading engineering consultancy, seeks a Sustainability Consultant or Senior Sustainability Consultant to join our Sustainability team. The role will be Bristol-based, with Plymouth/Exeter considered for the right candidate, supporting a nationwide practice.

You will lead environmental and wellbeing assessments and advance sustainable design, development, and operation across multiple sectors in a dynamic, collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience delivering environmental and wellbeing assessments across UK building projects.
  • Experience coordinating BREEAM/WELL/HQM/fitwel certifications.
  • Strong understanding of UK building design, construction processes and sustainability regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the delivery of environmental and wellbeing assessments from early design to post-construction.
  • Define, coordinate and complete design and post-construction assessments for various building typologies.
  • Lead focused workshops on BREEAM/WELL/Fitwel with design teams and clients.
  • Provide clear, practical advice to clients and multidisciplinary teams on achieving targeted ratings.
  • Develop and maintain BREEAM/WELL/fitwel trackers and supporting documentation.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers and contractors to identify and secure credits.
  • Review technical reports, drawings and specs against requirements.

About the role

We have a brand-new opportunity for a Sustainability Consultant or Senior Sustainability Consultant to join our Sustainability team. The role will be Bristol based; however, Plymouth/Exeter will be considered for the right candidate. It's an exciting time to be part of our broader Sustainability Discipline which has a presence in every Hoare Lea office across the country. In this key and varied role, you can expect to:

  • Lead the delivery of environmental and wellbeing assessment from early design stages through to completion. This includes BREEAM, Home Quality Mark (BREEAM Residential), WELL Building Standard and Fitwel.
  • Support training and development of junior staff covering the technical requirements and consultancy related to environmental and wellbeing assessment.
  • Define, coordinate and complete design and post construction assessments for a range of building typologies
  • Lead focused workshops on BREEAM/WELL/Fitwel with design teams including architects, structural engineers, Developers and Contractors
  • Provide clear, practical advice to clients and multidisciplinary design teams on achieving targeted BREEAM/WELL/fitwel ratings.
  • Support and/or lead in house Technical Excellence communities in advancing the firms knowledge in this area to allow us to stat at the cutting edge of knowledge in our industry.
  • Develop and maintain BREEAM/WELL/fitwel trackers trackers and supporting documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, contractors and other specialists to identify and secure appropriate credits.
  • Review technical reports, drawings, specifications and other project information against requirements.

Whilst the focus of this role is on environmental and wellbeing assessment certification, the role will require support in the delivery of wide sustainability services as appropriate. This could include, but not be limited to:

  • Sustainability and energy strategies for planning and design development
  • Bespoke sustainability charters
  • Environmental Impact assessments focusing on climate change
  • Building performance modelling, e.g. Part L, operational energy (TM54/NABERS), overheating risk assessment
  • Whole life carbon assessments and circular economy strategies
  • Credit specific reporting for environmental / wellbeing assessment e.g. Passive design studies, Mat 01 LCA appraisal etc.

As well as project-related work, you would have the opportunity to engage directly with industry, undertaking research and development studies, and authoring industry guidance.

About you

You are likely to have some knowledge and competence in a selection of the following fields.

Core competencies
  • Experience and track record of delivering environmental and wellbeing assessments with a focus on BREEAM/WELL/HQM/fitwel.
  • Experience of delivering the highest BREEAM/WELL certification levels.
  • A recognised BREEAM assessor or WELL AP qualification.
  • A good understanding of UK building design, construction processes and sustainability legislation.
  • The ability to interpret technical drawings/submittals, specifications and reports.
  • Confidence working closely with Clients and design teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, commitment to producing high quality outputs and proactive/collaborative approach to problem solving.
Advantageous competencies
  • BREEAM specific credit reporting
  • Planning documentation such as energy and sustainability strategies
  • Whole life carbon assessment (using OneClick LCA)
  • Energy modelling and assessment (e.g. Part L, TM54)
