Job description

Sustainability Consultant
Help shape a more sustainable built environment

Join an award-winning sustainability team where you'll have the opportunity to contribute to some of the UK's most exciting development projects. Working alongside experienced sustainability professionals, you'll support the delivery of sustainability certifications and consultancy services that help clients improve environmental performance, achieve ambitious ESG objectives and create healthier, more sustainable buildings.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career sustainability professional looking to develop technical expertise, gain exposure to a broad range of projects and build a long-term career within a leading multidisciplinary consultancy.

Purpose & Scope of the Role

As a Sustainability Consultant, you will support the delivery of sustainability certification and consultancy services across a diverse portfolio of projects. Working alongside experienced sustainability professionals, you will contribute to BREEAM, WELL and Home Quality Mark (HQM) assessments and help clients achieve their sustainability objectives.

This role is ideal for someone at the early stages of their sustainability career who is looking to develop technical expertise within the built environment sector. You will receive support and mentoring from senior colleagues while gaining exposure to a broad range of sustainability services and project types.

The team delivers services including BREEAM assessments, sustainability statements, Whole Life Carbon Assessments, daylight analysis, overheating assessments and circular economy strategies. This role provides an excellent opportunity to broaden your sustainability knowledge and develop your consultancy skills across multiple disciplines.

Working as part of a specialist sustainability team within the wider Building Services Group, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams, clients and technical specialists to help deliver positive sustainability outcomes across a wide range of developments.

Your Impact in this Position

From day one, you will contribute to the successful delivery of sustainability projects that create measurable environmental and social value. You will support project teams with sustainability assessments, evidence reviews, technical reporting and client deliverables while developing your understanding of industry standards and best practice.

As your experience grows, you will take ownership of elements of project delivery, develop specialist expertise and build confidence in client-facing activities. The role offers a structured pathway for progression, technical development and professional accreditation.

Long term, you will gain exposure to nationally significant projects, develop your sustainability knowledge across multiple disciplines and have access to ongoing professional development opportunities, including support towards Chartered status and industry accreditations.

Core Capabilities
Interest in Sustainability Certification

You will have a good understanding of sustainability principles within the built environment and some exposure to building certification schemes such as BREEAM. Working alongside experienced colleagues, you will assist with sustainability assessments, evidence gathering, technical reviews and reporting.

This role provides an excellent opportunity to build expertise in sustainability certification and develop a deeper understanding of environmental performance standards across a range of building types and sectors.

Sustainability Assessment and Analysis

You will support the delivery of sustainability assessments and environmental studies, contributing to technical reports, sustainability statements and project documentation. You will develop an understanding of wider sustainability issues, including carbon reduction, resource efficiency, circular economy principles and Net Zero strategies.

Exposure to Whole Life Carbon Assessments and carbon assessment tools would be beneficial but is not essential, and you will have opportunities to develop knowledge in these areas as part of your professional growth.

Stakeholder Engagement

You will work closely with project teams, clients and technical specialists to support the delivery of sustainability objectives across a variety of projects.

You will develop the ability to communicate sustainability requirements clearly and effectively, helping project teams understand certification requirements and implement practical sustainability solutions.

Project Delivery

You will assist in the delivery of multiple sustainability projects, supporting programme management, information collection and technical documentation. Working closely with senior colleagues, you will ensure deliverables are completed to a high standard and within agreed timescales.

You will contribute to a collaborative and supportive team environment, sharing knowledge and developing your technical capabilities through hands‑on project experience.

Communication Skills

You will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present information clearly and professionally. Whether preparing reports, collecting evidence or supporting client meetings, you will demonstrate attention to detail and a commitment to quality.

You will also be encouraged to develop your industry knowledge and stay up to date with emerging sustainability trends, legislation and best practice.

Training, Qualifications & Experience

You will hold a degree in Sustainability, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Architecture, Climate Change or a related discipline.

You may be a graduate with some relevant industry experience within a sustainability, environmental or built environment consultancy role.

Experience supporting sustainability assessments or working with certification schemes such as BREEAM would be advantageous, but we also welcome applications from candidates who have developed relevant sustainability knowledge through education, placements, internships or graduate employment.

Experience of WELL or HQM assessments, Whole Life Carbon Assessments, carbon assessment software, Net Zero strategies or circular economy principles would be beneficial but is not essential. We are committed to supporting professional development and helping successful candidates build their technical expertise and industry accreditations.

Working Environment

We offer a flexible and collaborative working environment that combines office, home and site-based working. You'll work closely with colleagues across the wider Building Services Group while enjoying the flexibility of hybrid working arrangements that support both effective collaboration and individual productivity.

Regular office attendance is expected to maintain strong team connections, knowledge sharing and client service standards, with office-based working patterns agreed in line with team and business requirements. The role also includes travel to client sites, project meetings and project inspections across the UK as required.

Flexible working options are actively supported, helping you balance professional responsibilities with personal wellbeing while continuing to deliver exceptional outcomes for clients and projects.
