Job description
About the Role

We are recruiting a compassionate, reliable, and hands‑on Support Worker to join a specialist SEN provision in Leeds. This setting supports children and young people with a wide range of complex needs, including physical disabilities, medical conditions, autism, PMLD, communication difficulties, and sensory processing needs.

Pupils in this provision require a highly structured, patient, and nurturing environment. Many are non‑verbal or pre‑verbal, use alternative communication systems, and may require full assistance with mobility, personal care, and daily routines. This role is ideal for candidates who are passionate about inclusive education, therapeutic support, and helping young people access a meaningful, personalised learning experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 and small‑group support for pupils with complex SEN, including autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, global developmental delay, and PMLD.
  • Assist with feeding, mobility support, hoisting, and personal care routines (full training provided).
  • Support pupils' physical and sensory needs using specialised equipment, sensory activities, and movement‑based programmes.
  • Encourage pupils' emotional, social, and academic development through structured, engaging, and differentiated activities.
  • Work closely with teachers, therapists, speech and language specialists, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists to deliver personalised learning and therapy targets.
  • Use communication tools such as PECs, Makaton, eye‑gaze technology, visual timetables, and sensory aids.
  • Promote independence where possible, helping pupils build confidence, communication skills, and autonomy.
  • Maintain a safe, calm, and regulated learning environment by responding sensitively to pupils' communication cues and sensory needs.
  • Monitor engagement, behaviour, and progress, feeding back to the class team to support effective planning.
Requirements
  • Experience as a Support Worker, Care Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, or in a health/social care environment (school or residential experience welcome).
  • Understanding of complex SEN, PMLD, or medical needs—professional or personal experience considered.
  • Comfortable supporting pupils with personal care, feeding, and mobility routines.
  • Calm, patient, and empathetic approach, with the ability to build trust and consistency.
  • Resilience, adaptability, and a genuine passion for helping young people with complex needs thrive.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).
  • Full‑time availability (Monday‑Friday, term‑time only).
