Job description
Overview

With Mike, work doesn’t need to feel like work. One day you might be pottering in the garden sowing seeds, the next you might be off looking for pirate treasures and bottles washed up onshore.

Mike is autistic with a learning disability and needs support in understanding the ‘why’ and the ‘how’. The team supports creative and unique ways of helping his understanding, such as creating a bespoke newspaper that has helped Mike develop and think more about his health and trying new things.

Essential requirements
  • Driver is essential and willing to use their own car.
  • Must be comfortable with supporting personal hygiene (e.g., bathing support).
Responsibilities
  • Provide transport and accompany Mike to places not accessible by public transport; mileage paid at 40p per mile.
  • Support Mike with his interests (gardening, plants) and activities (treasure hunting, metal detecting, games, and music).
  • Use creative and person-centred approaches to help Mike understand tasks and routines.
  • Contribute to a team culture that aims for self-direction; some leadership and development opportunities within the role.
Schedule and progression

Day shifts are 9am to 9pm and waking nights are 9pm to 9am. The rota is planned in advance to support a good work/life balance. There is an in-depth team induction to support you in the role.

Qualifications and attributes
  • Have a good sense of humour and be highly self-motivated.
  • Willing to learn and develop within the role and have a passion for the work.
  • Be a great communicator for Mike and willing to try new ideas and approaches.
  • Have similar interests or be sympathetic to Mike’s interests; good computer skills.
