Support Worker and Cook – Casual / Weekend Shifts

Join a dedicated residential services team in Newcastle, on a casual basis, providing both practical support and catering assistance within Approved Premises. You’ll play an important role in maintaining a safe, supportive environment while preparing nutritious meals that contribute to residents’ wellbeing and rehabilitation.

This role is known within the organisation as a Catering Project Support Worker.

SALARY: £12.97 per hour

LOCATION: Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne (NE4) – Fully Site Based (2 Sites)

JOB TYPE: Part-Time, Casual

WORKING HOURS: 8 hour shifts working 8am – 4pm, covering ad-hoc shifts over the weekend when required on a casual basis

JOB OVERVIEW

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Support Worker and Cook to join a supportive residential services team working across two Approved Premises in Newcastle.

As a Support Worker and Cook you will prepare and cook meals, maintain high kitchen hygiene standards, and provide vital day-to-day support to residents, helping to promote safety, independence, and pro-social behaviour.

This is a varied and rewarding position where no two days are the same. The Support Worker and Cook will contribute to a positive environment that encourages rehabilitation, compliance, and personal development while ensuring the smooth running of daily catering and support activities.

DUTIES
  • Preparing and Cooking Meals: Plan, cook, and serve balanced meals for residents
  • Maintaining Hygiene Standards: Ensure the kitchen, storage areas, and utensils are kept clean and safe
  • Supporting Residents: Engage positively, encourage appropriate behaviour, and promote wellbeing
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Follow risk assessments and procedures to maintain a safe environment
  • Carrying Out Inspections: Conduct building, room, and grounds checks, and record any incidents or defects
  • Safeguarding and Monitoring: Observe resident behaviour, report concerns, and follow safeguarding policies
  • Stock Control: Assist with ordering, storage, and rotation of provisions
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records, including medication logs and incident reports
  • Team Collaboration: Communicate effectively with colleagues and elevate issues when required
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Essential
  • Good numeracy and literacy skills
  • Experience of working with a diverse range of people
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including weekends and evenings
  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures and confidentiality
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Outlook, and basic Excel
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations
Desirable
  • Previous experience within a residential or supported living environment
  • Experience in a catering or cooking role
  • Understanding of factors related to offending or rehabilitation
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety principles and best practice
  • Experience motivating and supporting others to achieve positive outcomes
