Job summary

National Grid is seeking a Substation Project Engineer based in London with hybrid working (home, office and site). You will lead a portfolio of asset replacement and new build projects, ensuring safety, quality, time and cost targets are met across the region.

The role requires hands-on project management, strong stakeholder engagement and contractor management, plus knowledge of NEC contracts and CDM Regulations. A full UK driving licence is essential and energy sector experience is a plus.

Qualifications

• Minimum HNC in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a higher qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent experience).
• Strong project management, stakeholder engagement, and contractor management skills.
• Knowledge of NEC contracts and CDM Regulations.
• Understanding of health, safety, and environmental legislation.
• A full UK driving licence.
• Experience in the energy sector, HV substations, or construction is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a portfolio of asset replacement and new build projects, typically valued between £100k and £10m.
• Deliver HV transformer and shunt reactor installations, cable replacements, protection upgrades, and cyber security improvements.
• Oversee delivery teams and external contractors, ensuring safe and efficient execution.
• Take ownership of CDM responsibilities, ensuring full regulatory compliance.
• Manage project financials, forecasting, and reporting throughout the lifecycle.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Work across London region with occasional travel and overnight stays.
