Job summary

SSEN Transmission is seeking a Substation Project Engineer to join the Offshore AC Project Engineering team, driving Island projects and connecting to HVDC systems. The role covers 400kV assets, design reviews, FATs and safety-by-design principles.

You will collaborate with site and operations teams to ensure high-quality installations while managing tenders and specialist services for offshore and onshore assets.

Qualifications

• Experience with transmission level substations up to 400kV and asset replacement.
• Knowledge of CDM & Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations.
• Ability to assess technical solutions and address critical matters across project teams.

Responsibilities

• Create outline scope, site location plans, primary plant/substation layout and single line diagrams up to 400kV.
• Review contractor/consultants' detailed designs and witness FATs.
• Implement safety-by-design principles to control engineering and safety risks.
• Support site and operations teams to ensure quality installations with minimal network risk.
• Evaluate tenders and procure/manage specialist consultant services.

Base Location: For this role, we require successful applicants to be based from one of our Scottish locations and you'll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in the office – Glasgow, Perth, Inverness or Aberdeen

Salary: £51,600 - £77,400+ car /car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role

As part of SSEN Transmissions Offshore Portfolio of works, we have an opportunity for a Substation Project Engineer to join our Offshore AC Project Engineering team to help drive forward our Island projects and successfully deliver a network for Net Zero. Our Island projects facilitate the connection to our HVDC systems and include state‑of the‑art AC plant, grid control and stabilisation technology.

You will

• Create outline scope, site location plans, primary plant/ substation layout and Single Line Diagrams for new build and asset replacement type projects, operating up to 400kV.
• Review contractor/consultants detailed designs and witness Factory Acceptance Tests.
• Implement safety by design principles to ensure that engineering and safety risks are adequately controlled.
• Support site and operational teams to ensure the quality of installations, with minimal risk to Network security.
• Evaluate tenders and procure and manage specialist services from consultants.

You have

• Experience in transmission level substation projects, document review, factory acceptance testing, installation and commissioning ideally up to 400kV including AIS and GIS, and be comfortable to technically assess issues and critically assess a range of technical solutions.
• An understanding of the legislation and implications for the Transmission network management for both Assets and Projects, including Construction Design Management & Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations.
• A problem solving attitude with the strength of character to ensure critical matters are addressed by the project teams.
• Enthusiasm combined with excellent communication skills, with the ability to demonstrate diligence and prioritise tasks.
• A degree or HND in Electrical Engineering or relevant technical experience and ideally be a Chartered Engineer or working towards professional accreditation with a relevant institution.
